Philadelphia, Pa.—Senior Hassan Omar broke the school record in the 5,000m run on Thursday to lead the Retrievers at the Penn Relays. Junior Sophia Cologer also turned in a big performance to earn a spot in the all-time top ten.
Omar placed seventh in the race, crossing the finish line in a time of 14:08.93, breaking the record set by Anthony Kellhower of 14:09.20 in 2007.
Sophia Cologer led the charge for the women, taking 12th in the 5,000m run with a time of 16:48.24, good for second best in school history.
A pair of relays competed on Thursday, led by the 4x100m relay squad of Mercedes Tillman, Amani Wallace, Kara Patrice and Erin Patrice. The quartet placed 24th in a time of 47.25, qualifying for a spot in the ECAC finals on Friday afternoon. The 4x400m relay team of Tillman, Essence Fredericks, Funmi Daramola, and Yinka Alabi took home 41st with a time of 3:55.51.
Fredericks then turned in a 20th place performance in the 400m hurdle championships. Fredericks crossed the tape in a time of 1:02.03.
In the field, a trio of Retrievers took to the shot put competition. Nneoma Edokobi led the way with a 25th place finish with a toss of 12.40m (40'8.25"). Her sister Ozi Edokobi was right behind her in 26th with the same distance. Jennifer Nelson was right behind them in 29th with a throw of 12.01m (39'5").
Day two of the relays begins at 9 a.m. at Franklin Field.
