UMBC Track and Field Opens Season with Strong Showing at Penn State Relays

State College, Pa.—The Retriever track and field teams kicked off the 2016 campaign on a solid note at the Penn State Relays on Saturday. Several Retrievers earned top ten finishes, including Daryian Miles earning an IC4A qualifying mark in the lid-lifter.

Miles placed sixth in the 60m dash, crossing the tape in a time of 6.92, earning him a spot in the IC4A Championships later this winter. Miles earned a spot in the finals after finishing seventh in the prelims, going 6.98.

Hassan Omar kicked off the indoor campaign by running the fifth best time in school history in the mile, clocking in at 4:10.97, good for fifth place. In other distance events, Erick Soetje placed ninth in the 500m dash, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:05.54. Brandon Bejarano and Rami Phillips placed five-six in the 1,000m run with times of 2:33.28 and 2:34.38 respectively.

The men's 4x1 mile relay team of Omar, Jon Luckin, Rhys Burgett, and Patrick Duboyce earned a third place finish with a time of 18:02.65.

In the field, Isahq Rana led the way with a sixth place finish in the weighted throw (16.13m) and a second place finish in the shot put (16.63m).

On the women's side, a handful of Retrievers earned top ten finishes, led by the distance runners. Sophia Cologer earned an eighth place finish in the mile run, clocking in at 5:10.30. Essence Fredericks finished the 500m dash in a time of 1:16.19, good for fifth place. Elise Allen rounded out the distance top ten finishers, taking home seventh in the 1,000m run (3:08.36).

In sprints, rookie Erin Patrice earned a spot in the 60m dash finals after placing sixth in the prelims. In the final heat, Patrice took home fourth, clocking in at 7.72.

The distance medley squad of Angel Bucci, Allen, Angelina Oputa and Cologer placed fourth with a time of 12:27.36.

In the field, a trio of Retrievers led the way including Jennifer Nelson, Jean Udo and Abigale Slonski. Nelson placed eighth in the weighted throw with a toss of 15.38m. Udo and Slonski took fourth and fifth respectively in the triple jump, with their best jumps of 11.26m and 11.10m.

The Retrievers will be back in action next weekend, Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Great Dane Classic. The meet will commence at 10 a.m. at the Ocean Breeze Park Complex in Staten Island, N.Y., the site of the America East Indoor Championships.
