BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse hits the road for back-to-back games, starting with a trip to Drexel on Saturday, March 8. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Vidas Field, with live action available at UMBCRetrievers.com.
UMBC holds an 8-4 advantage in the all-time series against the Dragons, including last season's, 14-8, victory on March 9. The Retrievers trailed, 4-3, at the half in last year's matchup, but exploded for an 11-goal second half, including eight straight scores, to hand Drexel, who had been receiving votes in the national polls, its first loss of the season. Midfielder Alyssa Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State) scored a game-high four goals in the contest.
The Retrievers have battled injuries in the early going to post a 2-3 record through the first five games. UMBC is coming off a tough 16-6 loss to High Point on Wednesday, but freshman Caroline Haggerty (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) stepped up in her first collegiate start to score the first two goals of her career in the loss.
Junior Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) snapped her four game scoring streak on Wednesday, but still leads the squad with eight points on the year. Semones has a team-best six scores on the season, while also leading the squad in draw controls (11) and ground balls (10). Sophomore Rachel Benzing (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) has chipped in nine draw controls and four assists.
Drexel (2-3) has dropped three straight, including Wednesday's matchup at Villanova, 9-5. Senior Kelly Palace scored a pair of goals in the contest to bring her season total to a team-best 10 scores. Senior Amanda Norcini and junior Joelle Hartke have each registered eight goals and four assists for 12 points apiece.
