EUGENE, Ore. – UMBC freshman
thrower Vincent
Rentzsch (Oranienburg, Germany) finished in 21st-place in
the javelin competition at his first NCAA track and field
championships, Saturday afternoon on the final day of the national
outdoor meet at Hayward Field at the University of
Oregon.
The fifth Retriever to ever reach the NCAA championships,
Rentzsch recorded his best toss of the day, a heave of 62.17m
(204'00"), in his second throw during flight one of the
competition. His distance placed him tenth in the
preliminary round.
Ohio State's Bill Stanley paced the opening group with
a toss of 72.79m (238'10) while Sam Humphreys from Texas
A&M led all throwers with his launch of 77.31 (253'07") during
flight two. Humphreys then recorded the top distance of the
day in the finals (77.95m; 255'09") to take home the gold
medal.
In his first season with the Black and Gold, Renztsch was on a
record-setting pace from the onset. In his first-ever outdoor
meet, the Florida State Relays, the rookie broke the 14-year old
school record in the javelin. He set a new mark the next
weekend at the Big Dawg Invitational at UMBC Stadium, and then went
on to do so two more times during the invitational
season. At the America East Championships, Rentzsch won
the event, along with garnering the decathlon title, to earn Most
Outstanding Rookie accolades.
He was not finished, however, recording his best-ever in his
final throw of the NCAA East Regionals at North Carolina
A&T. Posting a heave of 70.88m (232'6"), Renztsch
jumped from 15th overall to fifth and earned a spot at the national
meet in Oregon.
The Orianenburg, Germany native will now return home to
participate in the German National Championships to be held July
6-7.
