BALTIMORE – Using school record
performances and event victories, the UMBC men's track and field
team took first place at the Morgan State Legacy Meet which
concluded Saturday at Hughes Stadium. The men scored a
meet-best 122 points while Retriever women's squad finished tenth
with 36 points.
After taking the lead on Friday behind victories in the javelin
and hammer from freshman Vincent
Rentzsch (Oranienburg, Germany) and sophomore Thor
Serafenas (Olney, Md./Good Counsel/Clemson), the
Retrievers won three events on Saturday to clinch the victory.
Junior Yao
Adantor (Laurel, Md./Reservoir/Morgan St./Maryland), who
finished seventh in the hammer on day one, took the top spot in the
shot put with a new school record distance. Already the
record holder following the Big Dawg Invitational, Adantor improved
his mark at Morgan State with a toss of 16.60m
(54'5.5"). Serafenas also picked up a top-ten finish, placing
eighth.
The distance team provided the other two wins as junior Jake
Albino (Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley) won the 1,500m run
and freshman Hassan
Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) claimed the 5,000m
run. Albino paced the competition and pulled away on the
final straight away, finishing in
4:00.55. Sophomore Eric
Schuler (Columbia, Md./Reservoir) finished just three
seconds back in fourth place.
In the 5k, Omar led a group of five Retrievers placing in the
top-seven. The freshman crossed the line in a time of
15:00.18, with classmate Redatu Semon (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone)
and junior Tom
Eldridge (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) taking third and
fourth, respectively, and senior TJ
Cowing (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and junior Brandan
McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) taking sixth and
seventh.
In the sprints, senior Dennison
Long (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt/FIU) proved his
versatility once again, earning top-five finishes in both the 100m
and 200m dash events. In addition, he anchored the 4x100
relay team of Pat
Balderson (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore), Dosu
Teyibo (Silver Spring, Md./Barrie), and Jenove
Blanfort to an IC4A-qualifying time of 42.47.
For the women, senior Amanda
Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) made her return to the
shot put competition by recording a season-best toss of 13.76m
(45'1.75") to qualify for the ECAC meet next month.
Junior Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md./South
Carroll) posted a season-best time of 2:15.04 in the 800m run to
place fourth.
In the 5,000m run, freshman Harmony
Roche (Millersville, Md./Severn School) led a trio of
Retrievers in the top-seven. Roche took fifth in the
race with a time of 18:16.71, just ahead of sophomore Julie
Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and
freshman Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) who
finished sixth and seventh.
The Retrievers wrap up the invitational portion of their
schedule with the Penn Relays next weekend. The
three-day meet in Philadelphia begins on Thursday Apr. 25 at
Franklin Field.
