Mason Spring Invite Results
FAIRFAX, Va. – Competing with over
1,200 athletes from 37 different schools, four UMBC track and field
athletes broke school records as the Retrievers competed at the
Mason Spring Invitational at George Mason Stadium on Saturday.
Sophomores Paulette Fogle (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara)
and Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown,
Md./Huntingtown), as well as freshman Vincent
Rentzsch (Oranienburg, Germany), broke their own records,
while senior Trae
Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) broke a 38-year
mark in the 110m hurdles.
Already the school record holder in the 60m hurdles after
breaking the mark during this past indoor season, Proctor laid
claim to the outdoor record on Saturday. Getting through
to the event finals with a season-best time of 14.51, the senior
sprinted into the record books with a new career-best time of
14.12, breaking the previous school-best of 14.40 which was first
set in 1975 by Allen Hamlin and equaled by Bryan
Beadle in 1997.
Not to be outdone, the other athletes improved their marks once
again to further their bests. A week after posting a new
school-best in the 400m hurdles at the Duke Invitational, Fogle did
it again at Mason, lowering her career-best time to 1:01.59 while
taking seventh in the event. Jackson, who reset her record two
weeks ago at the Big Dawg Invitational, finished second in the 100m
dash, but moved her time to 11.57.
Rentzsch, meanwhile, set a new school and career-best in the
javelin for the third time this season. The freshman
placed third in the event on Saturday by becoming the first
Retriever to ever surpass the 200-foot mark with a toss of 208'3"
(62.47m). Junior John
Rybak (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) also had a
career-day, recording a personal-best throw of 168'7" (51.38m) to
move to sixth all-time at UMBC.
Senior sprinter Dennison
Long (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt/FIU) continued his
progress into the school record books, jumping to second all-time
in the 100m dash and third in the 200m dash. Long won the 100m
event in a time of 10.39 and now trails only UMBC head
coach David Bobb (10.18) in the record
book. In the 200m dash, the senior took third with a new
career-best time of 21.14.
In the mid-distance, America East indoor champion junior Andrew
Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) ran a new
career-best in the 800m, finishing with a time of 1:52.19, edging
his previous best (1:52.64), set two years ago.
Six Retrievers set new personal-bests in the 5,000m run, led by
freshman Hassan
Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) who took over fourth
all-time with a run of 14:46.55. Sophomore Eric Schuler
(Columbia, Md./Reservoir), junior Tom
Eldridge (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River), and freshman Noah Hutton
(Bel Air, Md.) also broke previous bests for the men while
freshmen Harmony Roche (Millersville, Md./Severn
School) and Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) each set
new bests in the women's race.
In the 3,000m steeplechase, freshman Redatu
Semeon (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) set a new personal-best
once again. Semeon led a trio of Retrievers in the race,
completing the course in 9:23.34 to take third all-time in the
school's top-ten list.
Junior Mo
Drammeh (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) bested his
previous career-mark in the high jump and cleared 2.04m (6'8.25")
to finish seventh at the meet and move into fifth at UMBC
all-time.
Freshman Caitlyn
Davis (River Hill, Md.) had a career-day in the field
events. Davis set career-bests in the pole vault, as
well as triple jump, moving into third at UMBC in the vault by
clearing 3.00m (9'10").
Sophomore Thor
Serafenas (Olney, Md./Good Coundel/Clemson) picked up
three top-ten finishes on Saturday, placing second in the hammer,
third in the discus, and eighth in the shot
put. Junior Yao
Adantor (Laurel, Md./Reservoir/Morgan St./Maryland) took
second in the shot and tenth in the discus throw.
The UMBC teams return to action next weekend when they travel
across town to take part in the Morgan State Legacy Meet on
Saturday, Apr. 20.
