INDIANAPOLIS – Having already broken
his career-bests and school records in the 200 IM and 200
freestyle, UMBC junior Mohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) concluded the NCAA
Championships by resetting his mark in the 200 backstroke, Saturday
morning at the IU Natatorium.
Hussein finished 37th overall in the event with a new UMBC
record-time of 1:44.90. Wisconsin's Andrew
Teduits recorded the fastest time of the morning
session, clocking in at 1:39.19.
"We as a program are extremely proud of Mohamed in his first
appearance at the Championships," head coach Chad
Cradock said. "Very few men are able to set
three personal-bests, let alone school records, at this type of
meet and he did that."
In his first full season with the Retrievers, Hussein became the
first male swimmer, and third UMBC swimmer overall to ever compete
at the national
championships. Previously, Jackie
Wisnauskus and Lindsey
Prather had qualified for the Retrievers in 1990 and
2002, respectively.
After breaking onto the scene in the spring of 2012, Hussein
surpassed his own accomplishments this season. In the fall, he
broke the UMBC Aquatic Complex record in the 200 IM in a meet with
Howard and continued his success by leading the UMBC men to just
their second-ever undefeated dual meet season.
Hussein rose to new heights at the post-season meets, garnering
Most Outstanding Male Swimmer honors at both the America East
Championships and the ECAC Championships. Following the
conference meet in Maine, Hussein was named the National Swimmer of
the Week by CollegeSwimming.com.
Overall, the junior swimmer owns six individual school records
in addition to aiding the 400 free relay team to a new program-best
time of 2:58.47 at the ECAC meet.
