LANDOVER, Md. – UMBC
senior Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) won
the weight throw and junior Andrew
Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) won the 800m run as
the UMBC track and field team competed against several local rivals
on Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning
Complex.
Both McDearmon and Smith set season-bests in the process, as
well as qualified for the IC4A meet in March. McDearmon
bested the field with a distance of 18.38m (60'3.75") while Smith
earned his win with a quarter-mile time of 1:54.66. The
senior thrower also placed sixth in the shot put with a heave of
14.44m (47'4.50").
McDearmon's performance was just part of a successful day for
the UMBC throwers. Junior transfer Yao
Adantor (Laurel, Md./Reservoir/Morgan St./Maryland) paced
the Retrievers in the shot put by finishing second and also picked
up a top-ten finish in the weight throw with a seventh place finish
after a season-best toss of 15.99m (52'5.50"). Thor
Serafenas recorded a well-rounded day as well, finishing
fifth in both of the events after registering personal-best
efforts. His toss of 16.25m (53'3.75") in the weight
throw moved him to fifth all-time in the Retriever record book
while his distance of 14.83m (48'8.00") in the shot also boosted
his best.
Junior Ray Stinsman
III (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) also aided the Retriever
throwers by taking eighth in the weight throw. His heave
of 15.26m (50'0.75") moves him into tenth all-time in UMBC
history.
Several other Retrievers earned top-ten finishes, led by
freshman Andrew
Keresztes (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) who
finished just three spots behind Smith in the 800m run with a time
of 1:57.87.
Senior Trae
Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) could not quite
match his school record performance of last week, but did break
eight seconds again in the 60m hurdles, finishing second in the
event with a time of 7.99.
UMBC also received two top-five finishes in the 5000m run as
senior TJ
Cowing (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and junior Vinny
DiSalvo (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) placed
second and fourth, respectively.
UMBC sophomore standout Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown)
returned to the win column in the 60m dash. For Jackson, the
UMBC record holder in both the 60m dash and 200m dash, it was her
third win of the season in the short sprint.
Freshman Angel Bucci (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby)
put in a personal-best effort in the mile, crossing the line in
5:13.76 to move up to seventh all-time in UMBC history.
The Retrievers garnered three top-ten finishes in both the 200m
dash and 400m dash. In the shorter distance,
junior Kirsten Jones (Brentwood, Tenn./M.L.K
Magnet), freshman D'Nique Phillip (Elkton, Md.), and sophomore Kalane'
Abbey (Laurel, Md./Laurel) finished third, sixth, and ninth,
respectively. Jones and Abbey also placed in the top-ten
in the 400 as sophomore Paulette
Fogle (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara) led the Retrievers
with a third place finish.
Senior Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) once
again placed highly in the throwing events. The veteran
thrower posted a season-best in the weight throw with a toss of
15.80m (51'10.00) to finish third. She also placed
eighth in the shot put.
UMBC continues its indoor season next week when the team splits
up for the first time of the year. Some of the Retriever
athletes will return to Pennsylvania for the Penn State National
Invitational while other will head to Virginia for the Patriot
Games at George Mason.
