NEW YORK, N.Y. – A week after
equaling the school record in the 60m hurdles, UMBC
senior Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) broke
the mark Friday at the Gotham Cup. Proctor finished tied
for third in the event, but became the first Retriever to ever
break eight seconds by finishing the finals heat with a time of
7.89. Last week at the Penn State Relays, the senior tied the
mark of 8.00 set by Negasi Gerima back in 2000.
Proctor was not alone in setting new a new personal best as
numerous other Retrievers followed suit.
America East Male Field Athlete of the Week Shioma
Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep/St. Francis)
continued to better his mark in the triple jump by finishing third
in New York with a personal-best leap of 14.71m
(48'3.25"). Obemeata qualified for the IC4A meet last
week and sits in fourth-place all-time in UMBC history.
In the throws, junior transfer Yao
Adantor (Laurel, Md./Reservoir/Morgan St./Maryland) earned
a seventh place finish in the weight throw by recording a
personal-best toss of 15.89m (52'1.75"). Thor
Serafenas was not far back finishing ninth with a distance
of 15.62m (51'3.00") to move into seventh all-time for the
Retrievers. In the shot put, Adantor finished third
(15.32m; 50'3.25") while Serafenas placed seventh (14.72m;
48'3.50").
The Retrievers also had a successful day in the distance events
as freshman Hassan
Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Frederick) moved into eighth
all-time in the 5,000m run with a time of 15:15.62.
For the women, sophomore Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown)
was just off her school record pace in the 60m dash, finishing
third with a time of 7.43. Freshman D'Nique Phillip (Elkton, Md.) also earned a top-ten
finish, placing tied for seventh with the third-fastest time in
school history (7.71).
In the mid-distance, sophomore Paulette Fogle (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara)
and junior Kirsten Jones (Brentwood, Tenn./M.L.K.
Magnet) finished 7-8 and each recorded personal-bests to move up in
the school record book. Fogle's time of 1:14.96 and
Jones' mark of 1:15.50 moves them into third and fourth,
respectively.
Freshman Angel Bucci (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby)
continued her strong start to the indoor season, lowering her
personal-best in the 3,000m run to 10:23.37 to move up to ninth in
Retriever history. Also in the distance runs,
sophomore Julie Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./Institute
of Notre Dame) finished third in the 5,000m run with a
personal-record time of 18:27.42.
Senior Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen)
placed fourth in the shot put, registering a season-best toss of
13.87m (45'6.25). Junior Emma
Mayne (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) set a personal-best in the
event, recording a throw of 11.66m (38'3.25) to take over tenth
all-time at UMBC.
UMBC now has a full week off from competition before making a
short drive down to Landover, Md. For the Terrapin Invitational on
Saturday, Jan. 19.
