BALTIMORE – The UMBC swimming and
diving teams combined to win 25 events in their season-opening
exhibition with Bucknell, Saturday afternoon at the
newly-refurbished UMBC Aquatic Complex.
Senior captain Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville,
Md./Academy of Holy Cross) led the way for the women's team with
individual victories in the 100-yd. and 400-yd. IM, as well as the
100 fly. She also helped the 200 medley relay team to a
win as the Retrievers swept the relays by also claiming the 200
free relay.
Kotonias' co-captain Claire Barron (Lowestoft,
England/Benjamin Britten/New Orleans) also had a strong meet for
UMBC, winning the 50 and 200-yd breaststoke events, and helping the
victorious 200 medley team. Classmate Tara
Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) also won
multiple events, earning first place in the 50 and 200 fly.
Senior Amy Fay (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) returned
from an arm injury to win the 200 free while junior Erika
Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) earned four
total wins, capturing the 50 and 100 free events, in addition to
anchoring both relays. Junior Talor
Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista) also picked up a win,
taking the 100-yd. breaststroke.
On the men's side, sophomore Rob
Breen (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) and junior Johan
Rohtla(Tallinn, Estonia/Tallin Secondary Science) each picked
up three individual wins. Breen captured the 200, 500,
and 1,000-yd. free events while Rohtla swept the backstroke events
while also leading off for the 200 medley team which won.
Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland
State) started off his senior year well, sweeping butterfly events
while classmates Steve
Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) andMohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) won the 50
breaststroke and 100 IM, respectively.
The Retrievers return to the pool in two weeks when the squads
host Rider, as well as the James Madison women's team on Oct. 13
for Parents' Weekend.
