COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The UMBC men's track and field team placed third and the women's team finished fourth at the Maryland Invitational on Saturday held on the campus of the University of Maryland.

As at the teams' first meet, the Weems Baskin Invitational last weekend in South Carolina, records were falling and multiple athletes slotted their names onto UMBC's all-time lists.

In the 100m hurdles, senior Iman Colberti (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H.Flowers) broke her own school record by taking top honors in the event with a time of 14.02.  Colbert had set the record at 14.09 during her junior year.  Junior Chowan Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) and freshman Whitney Ikpeze (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bladensburg) also picked up top-10 finishes for the Retrievers, placing fourth (15.60) and seventh (17.96), respectively.

Though not breaking the school record again, freshman Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) won the first outdoor event of her career, winning the 100m dash with a time of 11.89.  Classmate Ebonique Jones (New Castle, Del./William Penn) finished second and set a new personal-record with a time of 12.20 to now place fifth on the school's all-time list.

Freshman Kalane' Abbey (Laurel, Md./Laurel) finished third in the 400m dash while slotting her name at sixth all-time with a time of 57.65.

In the 3000m steeplechase, senior Keri Wilson (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and freshman Mary Katherine Kulp (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) each set new personal-records to finish third and eleventh, respectively.  Wilson still places second on the school list with a time of 11:35.04, while Kulp moves into fifth with a time of 12:42.03.

For the men, the field athletes led the way to the Retrievers' third place finish.  Senior Aaron Brooks (Upper Marlboro, Md./DeMatha) finished second in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 15.61m (51'2.75) while also taking fourth in the discus with a throw of 46.39m (152'2").

Junior Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) also finished in the top-10 in two events, claiming fourth in the shot put (14.29m, 46'10.75) and seventh in the hammer throw (48.03m, 157'7"). 

Freshman Malte Bertram (Einbeck, Germany/Goethschule Gymnasium) continues to move up on the UMBC's lists and now sits at seventh in the javelin after placing fifth at Maryland with a throw of 49.45m (162'3"). Junior Sean Kshimetski (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) finished just behind Bertram in sixth and ranks eighth in school history with his toss of 48.94m (160'7").

In the jumps, sophomore Dosu Teyibo (Silver Spring, Md./Barrie) took home top-10 finishes in the long jump (2nd, 6.74m, 22'1.5") and triple jump (3rd, 13.88m, 45'6.5") while entering the UMBC list in the triple jump at tenth.  Junior Shimoa Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep/St. Francis (N.Y.)) just beat out Teyibo in the triple jump to claim second with a leap of 14.09m (46'2.75").

The distance runners also picked up valuable points for the Retrievers, led by sophomore Brandan McGee's (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) win in the 3000m.  His time of 8:37.49 places him at third all-time in school history. Junior TJ Cowing (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and sophomore Tommy Eldridge (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) took home third and ninth, respectively, in the event.

The Retrievers now hit the road and travel to North Carolina to compete at the Duke Invitational next weekend.  The two-day meet starts on Saturday and runs through Sunday evening on the campus of Duke University.
