Fairfax, Va. – Seven different Retrievers
earned individual medals as the UMBC swimming and diving teams
competed on second day of the Patriot Invitational, Friday at
George Mason. After two days of the three-day
competition, the men's team sits in third place with 526 points, 64
points behind leader UNC-Wilmington, while the women are fifth
overall with 308 points.
Senior Andrew
Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) led the way for the
Retrievers, earning a sweep of the diving events at the
invitational by winning the 3-meter competition. A day
after claiming victory in the 1-meter event, Eckhoff scored a
297.20 in the event finals for the win. Sophomore Ryan
Green (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) joined Eckhoff on the
stand by winning the silver medal by accumulating 270.25 points in
the finals. Junior Tim
Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscorora) and sophomore Carson
Wong (Hong Kong/Kowloon Technical School) also scored for
the Retrievers, placing fourth and sixth, respectively.
In the women's 1-meter competition, sophomore Katie
Bean (Mechanicsburg, Va./Atlee) reached the event finals for
the second straight day, and placed sixth overall.
In the pool, senior Mohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory) earned two more individual
medals Saturday, a day after winning gold in the 200
IM. The versatile seniorr opened his individual set by
finishing third in the 100-yd. butterfly (50.04) and then moved up
one step on the podium with a second place finish in the 100
backstroke (49.96). Hussein capped his day by leading
off for the 800 free relay team which earned a silver medal.
Senior Pierre De
Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State),
the anchor for the 800 free relay, won an individual silver medal
with his swim in the 200-yd. free (1:40.42).
In the 100 breast, freshman Leo
Endres (Bamberg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymnasium) and
senior Steve
Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) earned a two-three
finish to pick up valuable points for the Retrievers.
For the women, senior Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of
Holy Cross) won the team's only individual medal, a silver, in the
400 IM (4:26.40). In the final event for the women,
Kotonias combined with junior Talor
Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista) as well as
seniors Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England/Benjamin
Britten/New Orleans) and Amy
Fay (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) to place second in the
800 free relay.
UMBC wraps up the three-day Patriot Invitational tomorrow with
the final two sessions at George Mason. The event
preliminaries for the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and
1,650 free will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the event finals, in
addition to the 400 free relay, starting at 6:00 p.m.
