BALTIMORE, MD. – The UMBC track and
Field team competed at three separate meets over the past two
days. Heptathletes participated at the Bison Open and
Multi in Lewisburg, Pa., while the sprinters and distance runners
split up between the Patriot Games in Fairfax, Va. and the Penn
State Nationals in State College, Pa.
Patriot Games
Competing at the event held at George Mason, the Retrievers
picked up multiple top-10 finishes at the day-long
competition. The throwers had a particularly successful
day led by junior Cameron
McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) who won the weight
throw with a toss of 17.37m (56' 11.85") while also placing second
in the shot put, with a throw of 14.40m (47'
2.92"). Sophomore Chris
Nash (Parkton, Md./Hereford) picked up second in the
weight throw (16.62m, 54' 6.33") and classmate Ray Stinsmann III
(Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) claimed fifth (13.54m, 44'
5.07"). Stinsman also claimed bronze in the weight throw
(14.10m, 46' 3.11").
Freshman Mary Katherin Kulp (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) continued her
strong rookie campaign, running a 3:02.25 in the 1000m, which
places 4th on UMBC's all-time list.
Senior Keri
Wilson (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and sophomore Kirsten McGovern (Sykesville, Md./Century) also
picked up top-five finishes, claiming second and third,
respectively, in the 3000m run.
In addition, freshman Sarah
Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) won silver in the
500m, with a time of 1:21.07, while classmate Monica Hagenauer (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland)
placed second in the shot put (12.68m, 41' 7.21").
For the men, freshman Charles Bolinger (Bowie, Md.)
claimed second in the 800m, while junior Shioma
Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Preparatory/St. Francis
College) also picked up a silver, his in the triple jump, following
a jump of 13.84m (45' 4.88").
Penn State Nationals
At the national meet in State College, Pa., the Retrievers
picked up four top-10 finishes across the
events. Junior Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) finished
fifth in the shot put after a personal-best toss of 47'
8".
Freshman Mercedes Jackson (Huntington, Md./Huntington)
competed well, also placing fifth at the meet, completing the 60m
dash in 7.54.
Bison Open and Multis
Competing in a full heptathlon for the first time this season,
UMBC took home second and fourth at the meet held at
Bucknell. Freshman Malte
Bertram (Einbeck, Germany/Goethschule Gymnasium) claimed
the silver with 4,590 points, which places ninth on UMBC's
all-time list. Meanwhile classmate Eric
Ezenwanne (Columbia, Md.) picked up fourth with 4,322
points good enough for ninth on the school's all-time
list. Bertram won the shot put event with a toss of
11.45m (37' 3.78").
The Retrievers continue their indoor schedule next week when
they travel to New York City for the New Balance Collegiate
Invitational. The meet is scheduled for Friday and
Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4.
