Women's Lacrosse Drops 11-9 Decision to Cal-Berkeley

BALTIMORE - UMBC senior attack Ali Levendusky became the 11th Retriever to score 150 points in her career with four on the day, but the UMBC women's lacrosse team (2-9) lost its seventh straight game, falling to California-Berkeley (5-5) by a score of 11-9 Sunday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

Levendusky scored three goals and added an assist to give her 152 career points and move her into a tie with former teammate Kelly Fahey were 10th place all-time in UMBC history.

The Golden Bears scored the first three goals of the game, as attack Madeleine Dale scored twice in the first 3:20 of play.

UMBC junior defender Sarah Willis put the Retrievers on the board at the 16:44 mark with her first goal of the season, but Cal attack Brittany Aungier answered just 17 seconds later. The Bears held a 5-2 lead at halftime.

California scored three of the first four goals of the second period, but the Retrievers attempted to mount a comeback, tallying three straight over a four-minute span to pull to within two goals at 8-6.

The teams then alternated goals over the final 15 minutes. UMBC sophomore midfielder Kelly Burgoyne notched her second goal of the game with 3:52 remaining, but Cal midfielder Alyse Kennedy won the draw control and scored just 11 seconds later to put the Retrievers away for good. Levendusky tallied her third goal of the day with 13 seconds left for the final 11-9 score.

Levendusky's hat trick was her ninth of the season, and her three goals and four points led UMBC on the day. Burgoyne was the only other Retriever with multiple points.

Kennedy and Dale led the Golden Bears with three goals apiece, while Aungier scored twice.

UMBC sophomore goalie Kate Quick recorded nine saves in 60 minutes in the cage, while Cal netminder Allie Shropshire also went the distance and stopped 11 shots.

The Golden Bears dominated on draw controls, winning 15 of 22 on the day, including seven of eight in the first half. Attack Danni Zuralow and defender Alex Tickner each picked up four.

UMBC out-shot California, 31-21, including 16-9 in the second half. The Retrievers also held a 12-5 advantage on ground balls, as the Bears committed 17 turnovers to UMBC's nine.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, April 2, when they hit the road for the final time to take on America East rival Stony Brook at 3 p.m.
