ANNAPOLIS – The UMBC men's indoor track and field squad debuted in outstanding fashion in 2021-22, recording some outstanding results in the Navy Invitational.
Freshman
Shavar Staats (Ellicott City, Md.) started his Retriever career in brilliant fashion, winning the 60m dash in an ECAC/IC4A qualifying time of 6.89. The sub-7.00 time is the ninth-fastest in school history.
Senior
Michael Arnold (Upper Marlboro, Md.) also qualified for ECAC's, placing third in the 500m dash in a time of 1:05.18.
UMBC concluded the meet in style, winning the 1600m relay. The quartet of freshman
Marquis Miller (Baltimore, Md.), junior
Taheer Pierce (Camp Springs, Md./Wise), sophomore
Jaeden Burke (Silver Spring, Md.) and
Jayo Adegboyo (Columbia, Md.) posted a time of 3:20.06, just .19 seconds off of the ECAC/IC4A qualifying mark.
Freshman
Toren Burr (Caledonia, Ont.) and junior
Joel Evans (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) earned third place finishes in Annapolis. Burr posted a mark of 15.66m in the weight throw, while Evans crossed the tape in 2:31.67 in the 1000 meters.
UMBC will resume competition at the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge on January 15.
