Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Early in the
second half, UMBC women's lacrosse came within three, 9-6, of No. 1
Maryland, but the Terrapins scored five unanswered over the next
3:21 to shut the door on the Retrievers and remain undefeated with
a 17-10 victory on Tuesday night at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse
Complex.
Maryland (6-0) held a 21-8 advantage on draw controls in the
contest, including a game-high seven draws from freshman middie
Taylor Cummings. Senior attack Alex Aust piloted the Terrapins with
11 points on the evening, scoring four goals and setting a school
record with seven assists.
Junior attack Shannon Harkey (Purcellville, Va./Loudon
Valley) and sophomore midfielder Alyssa
Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State) each
registered three points on the night for the Retrievers. Senior
goalkeeper Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring
Harbor) tallied eight saves, including two stops on free position
shots by the Terps.
Following a save on a free position shot from Mason, the
Retrievers jumped on the offensive, with sophomore Jordan
Lyons (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter's Secondary) netting
her second goal of the year from Semones, to put UMBC on the board
first.
Maryland immediately responded, scoring three within a 1:46 time
span. Katie Schwarzmann dished off a pass after winning the draw
control to, setting up Halle Majorana for the Terps first score.
Schwarzmann assisted UMD's first two goals and then put away a
score of her own, to give the Terrapins a 3-1
advantage.
Semones got one back for the Retrievers (3-2), causing a
turnover, picking up the ground ball and finding the back of the
net for the ninth time this season, but Schwarzmann notched her
fourth point of the contest, finding the back of the net for the
4-2 advantage, the first of four-straight goals for the number one
team in the nation.
Harkey connected on her fifth free position shot of the last
week, to cut the Retriever deficit to four, 7-3 with 8:52 to go in
the half. Aust gave the Terrapins back their five-goal advantage,
coming from behind the cage for the score, her second of the
contest.
Wilson slipped one past senior netminder Kasey Howard high on a
free position shot for her seventh goal of the year to make it 8-4
in favor of the Terps, but Aust – Maryland's scoring leader
– struck again.
Junior midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City,
Md./Mount Hebron) beat Howard and the clock, scoring her first of
the game with five seconds remaining in the half. The Retrievers
would go into the break trailing 9-5.
Bilney opened the second half with her second-straight goal to
come within three, 9-6. UMBC seemed to gain the momentum, as Mason
deflected another Maryland shot, but a timely turnover led to a
Cummings goal – the first of five Terrapin goals in a 3:21
span.
Harkey took one to the net herself to put an end to the run, but
not before Maryland was able to go up 14-7. The Terrapins continued
their scoring outburst with three more in less than a minute time
span.
The Retrievers ended the contest with three-straight scores,
coming from freshman Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston),
Semones and freshman Rachel Benzing (Ellicott City,
Md./Centennial) – her first collegiate goal.
UMBC returns to action on Saturday, March 9, when it takes on
Drexel at the UMBC Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
