Women's Lacrosse Travels to Top-Ranked Maryland; Start Time Moved to 5 p.m.

BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse takes its 3-1 record to in-state rival and top-ranked Maryland on Tuesday, March 5. The Retrievers look to hand the undefeated Terrapins their first loss of the season at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. Game time, which was originally scheduled for 7 p.m., has been moved up to 5 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather.

UMBC bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 13-7 victory against Colgate on Saturday. The Retrievers exploded in the second half against the Raiders, outscoring Colgate 9-1 in the period. Junior midfielders Alyssa Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State) and Shannon Harkey (Purcellville, Ca./Loudoun Valley/Florida) combined for eight goals and one assist in the win.

The junior duo had a stellar week for the black and gold, as Harkey went four-for-five in free position shots and notched six goals in two games, including a career-high four goals against the Raiders. Semones concluded the week with five points and added a team-best 6.0 draw controls per contest.

Sophomore attacker Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) pilots UMBC with 12 points on the year, six goals and a team-best six assists, while junior midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) has notched nine goals on the year

Maryland (5-0, 2-0 ACC) has defeated two top-five teams during their first five games of the 2013 season and remained unbeaten on Sunday with an 16-11 victory against Hofstra. Seven different players scored a goal in the contest, led by attackers Alex Aust and Kristen Lamon who registered four goals apiece in the win.

The Terrapins are averaging 17.6 goals per game, led by Aust's 19 scores. The senior has added 13 assists for a season total of 32 points. Freshman midfielder Taylor Cummings is excelling in her rookie season at Maryland, racking up 16 points and 23 draw controls in five starts. Senior midfielder Katie Schwarzmann is tied with Cummings for second on the team in goals (14) and has chipped in six assists.

The Retrievers have defeated two of their last three ranked opponents, but have yet to defeat the No. 1 team in the nation during their history. The black and gold downed No. 13 Albany on March 24 last season and edged 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins in the regular season finale. UMBC last took on the top-ranked team in the nation on May 8, 2003, an 18-3 loss to Loyola.
