BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse
takes its 3-1 record to in-state rival and top-ranked Maryland on
Tuesday, March 5. The Retrievers look to hand the undefeated
Terrapins their first loss of the season at the Field Hockey and
Lacrosse Complex. Game time, which was originally scheduled for 7
p.m., has been moved up to 5 p.m. due to the threat of inclement
weather.
UMBC bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 13-7
victory against Colgate on Saturday. The Retrievers exploded in the
second half against the Raiders, outscoring Colgate 9-1 in the
period. Junior midfielders Alyssa Semones (Westminster,
Md./Westminster/Penn State) and Shannon
Harkey (Purcellville, Ca./Loudoun Valley/Florida) combined for
eight goals and one assist in the win.
The junior duo had a stellar week for the black and gold, as
Harkey went four-for-five in free position shots and notched six
goals in two games, including a career-high four goals against the
Raiders. Semones concluded the week with five points and added a
team-best 6.0 draw controls per contest.
Sophomore attacker Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston)
pilots UMBC with 12 points on the year, six goals and a team-best
six assists, while junior midfielder Kristen
Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) has notched nine
goals on the year
Maryland (5-0, 2-0 ACC) has defeated two top-five teams during
their first five games of the 2013 season and remained unbeaten on
Sunday with an 16-11 victory against Hofstra. Seven different
players scored a goal in the contest, led by attackers Alex Aust
and Kristen Lamon who registered four goals apiece in the win.
The Terrapins are averaging 17.6 goals per game, led by Aust's
19 scores. The senior has added 13 assists for a season total of 32
points. Freshman midfielder Taylor Cummings is excelling in her
rookie season at Maryland, racking up 16 points and 23 draw
controls in five starts. Senior midfielder Katie Schwarzmann is
tied with Cummings for second on the team in goals (14) and has
chipped in six assists.
The Retrievers have defeated two of their last three ranked
opponents, but have yet to defeat the No. 1 team in the nation
during their history. The black and gold downed No. 13 Albany on
March 24 last season and edged 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins in the
regular season finale. UMBC last took on the top-ranked team in the
nation on May 8, 2003, an 18-3 loss to Loyola.
