Men's Basketball Storms Back in Second Half, Defeats Maine, 84-79, Sunday Afternoon

ORONO, Maine--Graduate student Justin Fry (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) scored a career-high 20 points and junior Chris De La Rosa (Washington Heights, N.Y./All Hallows/Siena) added 24 points and a career-high 13 assists to help propel the UMBC men's basketball team to an 84-79 come-from-behind victory over second-place Maine at Alfond Arena Sunday.

Down 49-35 with 19:05 to go in the second half, the Retrievers (5-19, 4-7 America East) outscored the Black Bears (14-9, 8-3 AE) 18-2 over the next 5:50 to take a 53-51 lead, their first advantage of the day. De La Rosa, the America East Player of the Game, scored or assisted on 16 of the 18 points during the run. Fry, who was 9-10 from the field in just 20 minutes of action because of foul trouble, scored 14 of his 20 after intermission.

After Maine's Gerald McLemore gave the Black Bears a 58-55 lead with 9:23 to go, De La Rosa tied the game on a three-point play with 8:21 to go, then fed sophomore Adrian Satchell (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) to give UMBC the lead for good with 7:58 remaining at 60-58.

Graduate student Laurence Jolicoeur (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross HS/Manhattan) hit back-to-back three-pointers to extend the lead to seven, 66-59, with 5:48 left and the Black Bears were never closer than five the rest of game.

UMBC had four players in double figures for the second straight contest, with Satchell and Jolicoeur adding 12 and 11, respectively. The Retrievers set season-highs for points, free throws made and attempted (21-31) and assists with 20.

Maine was led by McLemore, who scored 24, including five from behind the arc.

UMBC has won four straight at Alfond Arena and tied the all-time series between the two schools at nine apiece.

The Black Bears held the advantage on the boards, 38-26, but committed 19 turnovers to UMBC's seven.

The Retrievers return to action Wednesday when they host Vermont at the RAC at 7 p.m.
