Retrievers Sweep 4x400m Relays on Final Day of America East Championships

RESULTS

Boston, Mass.—UMBC track and field concluded the America East Championships on Saturday, with the men taking fourth and the women seventh. The 4x400 men's relay team set a school record during the meet. Tori Johnson took home Most Outstanding Rookie on the female side as well.

The quartet of Jamal Cody, Erick Soetje, James Oakley III and Darrius Oxley broke the school mark earing gold in a time of 3:14.88.

Cody took home second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.12 before finishing the 400m in third in a time of 48.69. Soetje finished just behind him in fifth, clocking in with a time of 49.12.

Urgy Eado earned gold on Saturday in the 800m run. Eado crossed the finish line in a time of 1:52.14, just ahead of teammate Miles Smith in fifth (1:53.73).

Also on the track, Brian Nelson finished fourth in the 60m dash (6.92) and third in the 200m (21.55) with Oakley taking home second in the 200m in 21.45.

Christian Kallenberg finished third in the heptathlon with 4,803 points to lead the field athletes. Thomas Johnson took home fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 14.62m (47'11.75").

Albany once again won the men's title, finishing ahead of UMass Lowell, Binghamton and UMBC. New Hampshire, Vermont, Stony Brook, Maine and Hartford rounded out the nine-team field.

On the women's side, the 4x400m relay squad of Mercedes Tillman, Tori Johnson, Amani Wallace and Funmi Daramola earned gold with a time of 3:46.28.

All four of the team earned top five finishes in different events on Saturday. Tillman took third in the 400m (56.09), with Johnson taking silver in the 500m (1:13.85). Daramola and Wallace went three-four in the 200m with times of 24.52 and 24.69 respectively.

Other top Retriever finishers included Madeleine Entwistle in the 60m hurdles (seventh, 9.01), Erin Patrice in the 60m dash (fifth, 7.73), and Sophia Cologer in the 3,000m (seventh, 9:56.83).

The Great Danes took home first place, edging out Stony Brook and New Hampshire in second and third. Binghamton, UMass Lowell and Vermont were just ahead of UMBC in seventh. Maine and Hartford rounded out the field.

Johnson was named America East Most Outstanding Rookie for her efforts this weekend.

Next up for the Retrievers will be the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston on March 3-5.
