Track and Field Has Strong Start to Penn State National and George Mason Patriot Games

The UMBC track and field team returned to action on Friday at both the Penn State National and George Mason Patriot Games. The Retrievers were led by Jamal Cody at the in the 60m hurdles in State College.

Cody finished the prelims with a time of 8.18 in seventh place, before taking seventh in the semis with a time of 8.15. He would improve upon both those times with a fifth place finish in the finals in 8.12.

Other men's competitors included Brian Nelson who earned a spot in the semis of the 60m dash, finishing the prelims in 6.97 (14th place)  and the semis in 6.95 (tenth place). Matt Bennett and Austin Hayslett competed in the 5,000m taking tenth and 11th with times of 15:27.89 and 15:31.26.

The men's distance medley relay team of Miles Smith, John Oputa, Rami Phillips and Urgy Eado earned fourth, while also qualifying for IC4A's with a time of 10:11.29.

Erin Patrice led the women in State College earing a spot in the finals of the 60m dash. The sophomore finished the prelims in fifth with a time of 7.72 before taking eighth in the semis in 7.73. She earned a seventh place finish in the finals, crossing the finish line in 7.75.

Sophia Cologer had a seventh place finish in the 5,000m  run, clocking in with a time of 17:31.28.

In Fairfax, Christian Kallenberg sits in second place after day one of the heptathlon with a personal best 2,938 points.

The teams will be back in action tomorrow to conclude both the Penn State National and George Mason Patriot Games.
