UMBC Baseball Travels to Long Island for Weekend America East Series with Stony Brook

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball returns to conference play with a weekend set at Stony Brook on Saturday and Sunday. The Retrievers are coming off a 9-7 win against Coppin State on Wednesday at Alumni Field, and sit at 19-18, 7-7 AE on the year. The series with Stony Brook kicks off a seven game road swing for the Dawgs.

Game One: UMBC RHP Cory Callahan (0-1, 2.65 ERA) vs. SBU RHP Chad Lee (4-2, 1.00 ERA)

Game Two: UMBC RHP Conrad Wozniak (5-2, 3.29 ERA) vs. SBU RHP Bret Clarke (5-1, 2.04 ERA)

Game Three: UMBC RHP Jacob Christian (2-1, 4.46 ERA) vs. SBU RHP Tyler Honahan (3-5, 6.86 ERA)

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers are coming off a 9-7 win against Coppin State on Wednesday at Alumni Field. Senior Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) helped the Retriever cause, going 3-4 from the dish with three RBIs. UMBC as a team hit five sacrifice flies to help fuel the comeback victory.

-Lachance leads the team offensively, hitting .411, having played in every game. He leads the team in hits (60), doubles (11), as well as swiping 23 bases in 27 tries. Classmate Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) is second on the team with a .372 average, while junior Hunter Dolshun is hitting .331 with a team best seven home runs.

-On the mound, Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) leads the rotation with a 3.29 ERA in nine starts this season. Wozniak has a 5-2 record in 52.0 innings pitched with a team best 42 strikeouts. Junior Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) has made three starts, throwing 37.1 innings of work with 20 strikeouts.

Scouting the Seawolves:

-Stony  Brook heads into the weekend after dropping a 14-9 decision to Fairfield on Wednesday in Connecticut. Both teams took turns with the lead, but it was the Stags who put up seven runs in sixth to take the lead for good.

-A trio of Seawolves are batting over .300 on the year, led by Andruw Gazzola who is hitting .355 on the year. Gazzola leads the team with 49 hits and ten doubles. Jack Parenty and Toby Handley are batting .331 and .308 respectively, each with 40 hits. Parenty has driven in 24 runs and swiped six bases.

-On the mound the Seawolves have a combined ERA of 4.90, as teams are hitting .272 against them. Chad Lee leads the weekend rotation with a 1.00 ERA, good for fifth in the nation. Lee has struck out 36 batters in 45.0 innings of work. Bret Clarke and Tyler Honahan will also make starts this weekend. Clarke is 5-1 with a 2.04 ERA in eight starts. Honahan holds a 3-5 record with a 6.86 ERA in 40.2 innings.

All-Time Series:

-The Seawolves lead the all-time series, 48-10, including a split earlier this year. The Retrievers dropped the opener, 15-10 before taking the second game 2-1 on a walk-off single.

-The last time the Retrievers won a game up in Stony Brook came back on March 29, 2013 in a 2-1 extra inning win. All-time the Retrievers have won just five games on Long Island.

Chasing No. 100:

-Head Coach Bob Mumma is fast approaching 100 career wins as a head coach. In his fifth year at the helm of the Retrievers, Mumma had a 79-121 heading into the season. The Retriever alum is just two wins away from hitting the career milestone, after a 9-7 win against Coppin State on Wednesday.

On Deck:

-The Retrievers will head to Fairfax, Va. for a Tuesday meeting with George Mason on May 3. First pitch with the Patriots is set for 3 p.m.
