BALTIMORE – UMBC women's lacrosse
looks to continue its outstanding start to the 2013 campaign on
Wednesday, Feb. 27, when it takes on No. 17 Towson. The opening
draw is set for 4 p.m. at UMBC Stadium and can be seen live on
UMBCRetrievers.tv.
The Retrievers are off to a 2-0 start for just the second time
in the last 15 years of the program and look to knock off the
nationally ranked Tigers for the fourth time in their last 11
tries. UMBC defeated a pair of nationally ranked contenders last
season, edging No. 19 Johns Hopkins, 7-6, in the regular season
finale and slipping past No. 13 Albany, 8-5.
Senior midfielder Lindsay Cox (High Bridge,
N.J./Voorhees) earned America East Offensive Player of the Week
recognition, after tallying four goals and one assist in a 7-5 win
against California on Saturday. Cox leads the team with eight goals
– ranking eighth in Division I in goals per game (4.0)
– and has added seven draw controls in the Retrievers two
contests.
Sophomore attack Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston)
leads the team in assists with three and ranks second on the team
in points (seven) and shots (nine), while midfielders Kristen
Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) and
newcomer Alyssa Semones (Westminster,
Md./Westminster/Penn State) have also contributed to the
Retrievers' offense in the early going, combining for eight goals
and three assists.
Senior netminder Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor,
N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) also earned conference recognition on
Monday, being named the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
Mason tallied eight stops in UMBC's victory over the Golden Bears
and has registered a .433 save percentage on the
season.
The Tigers (0-2) are in the midst of a three-game road swing to
the start the 2013 season and thus far have dropped their first two
contests to a pair of ranked opponents. Attack Sarah Maloof notched
four of her team-best six goals in Saturday's 13-10 loss to No. 15
Georgetown. The sophomore added two assists in the contest to
increase her season point total to a team-best nine.
Senior Kelly Custer ranks second on the team in goals (three)
and points (three), after tallying a pair of goals against the
Hoyas. Paige Duncan and Jackie LaMonica have also contributed three
points apiece for the Tigers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsea Donnelly stopped 11 shots against
the Hoyas, but Georgetown outshot Towson, 27-18, in the contest.
Donnelly has faced 52 shots in two games and has made 19 saves.
