ORONO, Maine – UMBC women's basketball had four players score in double-digit points, including a pair of 20-point efforts from senior guard Brittany Crowell (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park/James Madison) and Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American) in an 86-79 victory against Maine in America East action at Alfond Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Harris notched her second 20-point performance of the week, finishing with 20 points and a career-high nine assists to earn America East Player of the Game honors, while Crowell connected on five threes en route to a team-high 22 points. Sophomore guard Bria White (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Longwood) added 18 points and five rebounds and senior guard Kristin Coles (Charles Town, W.Va./Notre Dame Academy/American) chipped in 11 points and six rebounds off the bench, in her first action since Jan. 2. 

The Retrievers (7-15, 3-6 AE) shot a season-high 34 treys – with Crowell (16), White (12) and Harris (six) combing for all 34 takes – and connected on a season-best 12 from beyond the arc to put up its highest point total of the season. UMBC tabbed its first road win of the season and completed the season sweep against the Black Bears.

UMBC trailed by four, 20-16, at the 11:36 mark of the first half, as Maine's sophomore forward Danielle Walczak scored nine early points. The Retrievers, who started the contest two-for-nine from beyond the arc, connected on three of its next six three-point attempts, in the midst of an 18-4 run, giving UMBC a 34-24 lead with 4:45 left in the half.

The black and gold scored a season-best 43 points in the opening half, with Crowell and White drilling a combined seven threes in the stanza for 12 and 11 first half points, respectively.

The Black Bears chipped away at its 13-point halftime deficit, 43-30, opening the second half on a 14-7 run – seven points coming from freshman forward Liz Wood – to help trim down the Retrievers lead to five points, 50-45, with 15:43 to go. UMBC responded with six-straight points from Coles, to push back out in front by double-digits, 56-45.

Maine continued to look for its post presence in the remainder of the second half, with Woods and Walczak combing for 38 points in the period. The duo would help the Black Bears to come within six two more times in the half, but each time the Retrievers found someone to answer and the advantage to extend back to double-digits.

The Black Bears stayed in the zone, despite the Retrievers shooting better in the second half, allowing UMBC to led by as many as 14 points in the stanza, but Maine was not willing to go down without a fight. The Black Bears made one final push with 2:02 to go, down by 12 following three free throws from Crowell, 81-68. A Wood trey capped off an 8-3 exchange in favor of Maine and brought the Black Bears within seven, 84-77, with 48 seconds to go, but Harris and senior forward Kim Browning (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) each connected on a free throw in the final minute to seal the victory for UMBC.

Browning registered career-highs in points (eight), rebounds (11) and added two blocks for the Retrievers.

Walczak and Wood each finished with double-doubles for Maine (2-20, 1-8 AE). Walczak shot 10-for-15 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 28 points, to go along with 11 rebounds to garner America East Player of the Game honors for the Black Bears. Wood, the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, added 19 points and 12 rebounds – including seven offensive boards.

UMBC looks to give Albany its first conference loss of the season, when the Retrievers travel to the site of the 2013 America East Championships, SEFCU Arena, on Wednesday, Feb. 6. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

-UMBC moves to 1-9 in road games on the season. The Retrievers have won five-straight against Maine and to take control of the all-time series 11-9.

-The Retrievers had four players reach double-digit points for the second time in four games.

-UMBC scored a season-high 86 points, reaching 80+ points for only the second time this season. The Retrievers also matched a season-high with five blocks.

-The Retrievers finished with a season-high 12 three-pointers, the first time UMBC has made 10-plus three since Dec. 29, 2011 against Virginia Tech.

-UMBC took a season-high 34 threes, its previous high of 25 came against Boston University on Jan. 26. The Retrievers season-high 12 makes, surpassed their previous high of eight makes against Loyola on Nov. 17.

-Raven Harris registered 20-plus points for the second-straight game and for the third time in six games. She has scored double-digit points in every conference game this season.

-Brittany Crowell has led the Retrievers in scoring nine times this season and has a team-best four 20-point performances on the year. Today marked the first time this season that UMBC has two 20-point scorers in one game. The last time this happened was Jan. 2, 2012 against New Hampshire, when Erin Brown had 21 and Kristin Coles had 20.

-Crowell, the league's leader in three-point field goals made during conference play, knocked down five treys for the fourth time this season.

-Kristin Coles played in only her fourth game all year, notched double-digit points for the second time.
