Track and Field Wins Eight Golds at Gulden Relays

LEWISBURG, Pa.--The UMBC men's and women's track and field teams opened 2011 with eight wins at the Gulden Relays Saturday afternoon.

On the men's side, sophomore Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) won the 60-meter hurdles in an IC4A-qualifying time of 8.21 and freshman Mo Drammeh (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) won his second consecutive high jump, hitting a mark of 1.99m, while senior Martin Nevarez (Casa Grande, Ariz./Central Arizona College) won the pole vault at 4.65m.

Two men's relays, the distance medley relay of juniors Roy Jones (New Market, Md./Linganore) and Patrick Hairfield(Abington, Md./Archbishop Curley) and freshmen Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Jake Albino (Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and the shuttle hurdles relay of seniors Keith Brown (Columbia, Md./McDonough) and Keith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro/St. Francis (PA)), freshman John Rybak (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Proctor each earned gold in 10:37.37 and 32.73, respectively.

Three Retriever men finished second, including junior Arjun Pradeep (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) in the 500-meter dash (1:08.23), junior Tim Jones (New Market, Md./Linganore) in the 1-mile run (4:31.28) and sophomore TJ Cowing (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) in the 3,000-meter run in 8:49.89.

On the women's side, sophomore Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) won the shot put with a throw of 14.06m, while junior Chrissy Robinson (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) finished second with a heave of 12.64m. Deller also earned silver in the weight throw, hitting a mark of 15.98m.

Sophomore Chowan Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) won the high jump with a mark of 1.60m, while freshman Tina DiPaola (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) placed second with a mark of 1.55m.

UMBC finished 1-2-3-4 in the 500-meter dash, with freshman Kirsten Jones (Brentwood, Tenn./M.L.K. Magnet) winning in 1:18.39, while fellow freshmen Deborah Adelola (Lanham, Md./Bladensburg) and Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md/South Carroll) and junior Lauren Leclercq (Jessup, Md./Meade) finishing right behind.

The Retrievers return to action next Saturday when they compete at the New York Armory in New York City.
