Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The UMBC baseball team dropped its fourth straight game Sunday afternoon, losing to Pittsburgh, 12-8. The Panthers improved to 8-5 on the season, while the Retrievers dropped to 1-6.
Freshman Justin Lamborn (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnett Valley) scored a season-high three runs, while seniors Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC) and Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) each had three hits. Retz, senior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) and freshman Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) each drove in two runs as the Retrievers fell behind 4-0 after two innings, but scored four in the third off Pitt starter David Kaye.
The Retrievers scored a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but the Panthers scored four in the bottom of the seventh against freshman Steve Miller (Newark, Del./Dickinson) (0-1) and would not relinquish the lead.
UMBC sophomore starter Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) allowed four runs while striking out three in five innings pitched, while Kevin Dooley (1-1) allowed just two in 3 and 2/3 innings pitched to earn the victory.
The Retrievers return to action Monday down in West Palm Beach, Fla. against North Dakota State at 2 p.m.
