Sports Medicine at UMBC
There are two facilities for Retriever Student - Athletes to receive their care. The main athletic training room is located in the Retriever Activities Center on the entry level. Newly built and furnished, this training room provides the athletes with a variety of rehabilitation equipment and modality units to do their treatments. Hydrotherapy room includes whirlpools and ice machine. It is here volleyball, basketball, swimming, and tennis prepare for their events.
The second facility is located at the UMBC Sports Stadium Complex next to the track and turf. This training room contains rehabilitation equipment and modality units as well. There is a fully equipped hydrotherapy room with whirlpools and ice machine. It is conveniently located in between the men’s and women’s locker rooms.
The Sports Medicine Department at UMBC provides athletic training services to approximately 425 UMBC student-athletes. A staff of five certified athletic trainers, oversee the medical care for all of the student athletes competing in UMBC’s 20 varsity sports. The services include evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, education, and prevention of injuries occurring during participation in athletic activities. Our athletic training staff covers all practices and home events.
Cindy Kubiet enters her 29th year at UMBC. She was appointed as the Director of Sports Medicine Services in 1985. She is a graduate of University of Pittsburgh and completed her Master's degree at the University of Virginia. Kubiet is assisted by a staff of four certified athletic trainers and approximately 10 students. All staff members are certified by the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification.
Michelle Daniels is entering her ninth year on staff. She attended the University of Maryland, College Park and Florida International University. Michelle's primary sport responsibility is with men's lacrosse and Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving. Michelle is also responsible for the student athletic trainer program. Ashley Moorefield, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, returns for her third year covering women's soccer and baseball. New on staff this year, Katie Selius joins us by way of Pittsburgh and University of Florida. She will be covering Women's Basketball and Softball. Finally, Megan Murphy joins the UMBC staff as our graduate intern from Salisbury University. She will work with men's soccer and women's lacrosse.
Dr. Andrew Tucker has served as UMBC's team physician for 14 years. He is also the head team physician for the Baltimore Ravens, caring for players and organization members from football injuries to general medical health. Dr Tucker also provides services to Coppin State University and Loyola College. Dr. Tucker earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University and completed his Fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. Dr. Tucker is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Family Physicians and maintains a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. Dr. Tucker's practice focuses on acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries and conditions in active people of all ages, and medical problems and issues that are unique to sports and exercise. Dr. Tucker currently serves on three NFL advisory committees, and is President-Elect of the NFL Physicians Society. He sees patients at Union Memorial Hospital and in the Union Memorial Sports Medicine Lutherville office.
Dr. W. Hugh Baugher has served as UMBC's team physician for 26 years. He also serves as a team physician at Johns Hopkins University and previously provided team physician services to the Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Thunder and various national amateur and NCAA events. Dr. Baugher earned his medical degree at the University of Virginia Medical School. He trained in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He completed his Fellowship in Sports Medicine at The Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell University Medical College and his fellowship in Hand Surgery at Cabrini Medical/NYU Center. Dr. Baugher is a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. Dr Baugher specializes in the shoulder, hand, wrist, knee, sports medicine and arthroscopy. Dr. Baugher sees patients at The Curtis National Hand Center at Union Memorial Hospital and in the Union Memorial Sports Medicine Lutherville office.
Dr. Alan Sokoloff has served as UMBC’s team chiropractor since 1991. Dr. Sok is also the team chiropractor for the NFL’s Ravens. He was also a member of the USA Olympic Sports Medicine Team for the 1999 Pan American Games. Dr. Sok was selected as one of four chiropractors in the country to serve an internship at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs during the summer of 1997. He also served as part of the medical staff at the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York City. Last year, Dr. Sok and the other doctors of the Yalich Clinic worked with the Baltimore Orioles AA team, the Bowie Baysox. This year, they started providing services to the DC Nationals and UMCP Terrapins. Dr. Sokoloff is a graduate of UMBC and Palmer College of Chiropractic Medicine. He is the owner/clinic director and currently practices at The Yalich Clinic & Rehabilitation Center of Glen Burnie. He is a published presenter and educator of ergonomics, sports and health. In addition to the many techniques utilized by Dr. Sok and the other doctors, Dr. Sok specializes in the Graston Technique.
