BETHLEHEM, Pa. – UMBC senior Cody Mezbish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) recorded a career-best 6k time of 21:34 as the UMBC women's cross country team placed 18th out of 29 teams at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, Friday afternoon at Lehigh's Goodman Course.
Villanova (31 pts.) took home the team crown, paced by race champion Emily Lipari and runner-up Nicky Akande. Lipari just edged her teammate out at the 19:53 mark with Georgetown's Samantha Nadel placing third (20:09) to lead the Hoyas (35 pts.) to a second-place finish.
Mezebish paced the Retrievers squad for the fourth straight competition by finish 62nd overall out of 207 athletes. Her time eclipses her previous career-best of 22:00.77 which she set earlier this season at the Salty Dog Invitational at Navy.
Sophomore Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) once again was the second UMBC athlete across the line, completing the 6k course with a time of 22:14 in 99th place. Freshman Sarah Zielinski (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) and junior Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) were five and six seconds back, respectively, in the 107th (22:19) and 113th (22:20) spots. Senior Kirsten McGovern (Sykesville, Md./Century) rounded out the UMBC scoring squad, placing 157th in a time of 23:42.
