Volleyball Heads Up the Beltway for Towson Invite

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC volleyball team makes the short trek to Towson for this weekend's Towson Invite. The Retrievers will kick off the tournament on Friday, September 14 at 3:30 against Ball State at 1:00 AM. They then have a Saturday double-header starting at 10:30 am against La Salle and then a 7:00 PM matchup with the hosts.

Scouting the Retrievers:

UMBC (3-6) enters play coming off a third consecutive 1-2 weekend after closing out the Charm City Challenge with a four set win over Loyola (Md.). Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) had 10 kills, hitting .304 and added three blocks. Jamie Wood (Satellite Beach, Fla.) and Carmen Freeman's (Memphis, Tenn.) each had the best matches of their careers. Wood finished with nine kills (.533 hitting) while Freeman had a career-best 20 kills and added 11 digs. Krytsia Negrón (San Juan, Puerto Rico) earned her second all-tournament team nod of the season after averaging 45.3 assists, 14 digs and two blocks per match.

Scouting the Cardinals:

Ball State (6-4) comes to the east coast after sweeping IUPUI at home on Tuesday. Junior outside hitter Sydnee Vanbeek paces the offense, averaging 2.71 kills per set on .362 hitting and nearly a block per set.

Scouting the Explorers:

La Salle (5-4) travels to Baltimore as winners of four straight. They face Loyola (Md.) on Thursday night as a tune-up for the weekend tournament. Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Graver is the top overall threat for the Explorers. The Allentown native averages 3.44 kills per set for the offensive and 3.50 digs per set on defense.

Scouting the Tigers:

Towson (3-7) enters after losing four straight, all at home,  but all the losses came to tough opponents (Princeton, Long Beach State, Missouri, Ohio State). Freshman outside hitter Emily Jarome has a team-high 101 kills (2.89 per set) while averaging 1.51 digs per set.
