Volleyball Heads to Nation's Capital for GW Tournament

Baltimore, MD – The UMBC Volleyball Team will travel to Washington, D.C. to take part in the GW Tournament against Delaware and Holy Cross on Friday at 12:00 PM and 4:30 PM respectively and host George Washington on Saturday at 2:30 PM.

Scouting the Retrievers:

UMBC (5-5) is coming off an undefeated week going 4-0, only dropping two sets the whole week.  They defeated Coppin State 3-0 on Tuesday, and then won the Fairfield Inn & Suites Charm City Challenge, hosted by Loyola (Md), beating Morgan State (3-0), Presbyterian (3-1), and the host (3-1).  The Retrievers dominated play and received three All-Tournament honorees , including MVP Lauren Mortimer (Queen Anne's, Md/Queen Anne's) who had 14 kills and hit .478 in the championship match against Loyola.

The Retrievers are led offensively by freshman Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's) with 86 kills, and by Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) with a team-high 203 assists.  Defensively, Carola De Jesus (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) has 87 digs, and filled in nicely for a sick Kristin Watson last weekend.

Scouting the Blue Hens:

Delaware (0-7) is coming off a loss last weekend in Philadelphia against Boston College (20-25, 26-24, 25-9, 25-12).  Maria Bellinger led the team with 14 kills in the game, and currently leads the team with 90 kills and is second on the team with 46 digs.

Scouting the Crusaders:

Holy Cross (3-7) is coming off a weekend tournament in Providence, Rhode Island in which they went 1-2 in, losing to Providence and St. Francis (N.Y.) and beating Rider. Kristen Somerville hit .393 on the game.  The Crusaders are led on offense by Katie Kerins with 137 kills, while Sophie VanSeveren has a team high 181 digs.

Scouting the Colonials:

George Washington (2-8) enters the weekend after two games in the NDSU Invitational, dropping games against the host North Dakota State and Appalachian State. Jaimeson Lee recorded two double-doubles in their games this weekend, with 11 assists and 11 digs against NDSU and 30 assists and 17 digs against Appalachian State. Lee leads the team with 232 assists and is second on the team with 116 digs.

Inside the Matchups:

The Retrievers are 8-26 all-time against Delaware, with their last matchup coming in 2013, a 3-1 victory for the Blue Hens.  The only matchup against Holy Cross came in 2006, a 3-1 win for UMBC.  The Retrievers are 1-22 against the Colonials, with the last match coming last season, a 3-2 victory for George Washington.
