Volleyball Begins End of Season Road Swing at New Hampshire, UMass Lowell

BALTIMORE – After earning two victories on its last home weekend of the regular season, the UMBC volleyball team begins its end of the season road swing with matches against New Hampshire and league newcomer UMass Lowell.  The Retrievers will take on the Wildcats on Friday evening in Durham, N.H. at 7:00 p.m. before heading across the state line to take on the River Hawks in Lowell, Mass. on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

Scouting the Retrievers

UMBC (16-9, 7-3 America East) remained in a tie for second place in the conference with Stony Brook by earning a four-set win over Binghamton on Friday evening and then grinding out a five-set win against Albany on Senior Day on Sunday.  Senior hitter Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) and junior Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) recorded double-doubles in both matches to lead the Retrievers.  Senior Mallory McIntyre (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) dished out a season-high 58 assists on Sunday as UMBC completed its first-ever season sweep of Albany.

For the year, Goc leads the squad with a career-high 271 kills and is seventh in the league with a 2.71 kills per set average.  Classmate Emily Witsaman (Medina, Ohio/Medina) has been efficient up the middle for the Retrievers since returning from injury putting away 175 winners and recording a conference-best .286 hitting percentage.

McIntyre has kept UMBC balanced on the attack all season with four Retrievers sending down 200 or more terminations.   The senior setter leads the league with her 10.26 assists per set average while Goc and sophomore Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) both rank in the top-ten in the America East for kills per set.

On defense, UMBC leads the league in blocking (2.09 blocks per set) while ranking second in digs (16.18 per set).  Sophomore Krystal Mlemchukwu (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) is second in the America East with her 0.97 blocks per set average while freshman Casey Griffith (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) and Goc sit sixth and seventh, respectively, in the digs category.

Scouting the Wildcats

New Hampshire (14-12, 8-2 AE) sits atop the league standings following straight-set road wins over Hartford and Providence.  Sophomore hitter Tori Forrest and junior Taylor Dunklau captured the league Player of the Week and Setter of the Week awards after posting impressive numbers against the Hawks and Friars.  Forrest registered 28 kills and 26 digs in the six combined sets while Dunklau helped the Wildcats hit .276 in the two contests while sending out 79 assists.

On the season, Dunklau sits fourth in the league behind McIntyre in setting, averaging 9.50 assists per set while Forrest, who led UNH with 18 kills in its four-set win over UMBC earlier this season, is third in kills (2.91 per set).  Senior Morgan Thatcher is just above Forrest in averaging 2.99 kills per set and classmate Destiny Tolliver leads the America East in blocking (1.05 blocks per set).

All-Time Series

New Hampshire defeated UMBC in four sets on Oct. 6 for its third straight win in the series.  All of the meetings between the two schools have come since 2003, when UMBC joined the America East, and the Wildcats lead the all-time series, 12-9.  The Retrievers last claimed a victory over UNH in 2011 when they swept the Wildcats at the RAC Arena.

Scouting the River Hawks

UMass Lowell (0-22, 0-10 AE) remains winless in its first season as a Division I program after falling to Providence and Hartford on the road.  Junior Anisa Smith led the River Hawks with 12 kills against the Friars on Friday night while classmate Kamiren Humphrey sent out 23 assists.  On Sunday, Lowell was limited to just 22 kills with senior Brooke Peterson recording six winners.

Humphrey is eighth in the league this season in setting with a 4.49 assists per set average and senior Carolyn Eddy ranks eighth in digs (3.43 per set).

All-Time Series

UMBC and UMass Lowell met for the first time back on Oct. 4 with the Retrievers taking a straight-set decision.  Senior Rebecca Garrigues (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) handed out 29 assists and the Retrievers held UMass Lowell to just .022 hitting in the win.
