CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC freshman libero Casey Griffith (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) has been selected as the America East Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Griffith paced the Retriever back row at the Gold and Blue Players Challenge this weekend as UMBC defeated Liberty and Georgetown in back-to-back matches. For the weekend, the rookie scooped up 53 digs in three contests, including 26 in the five-set victory over the Hoyas.
For the year, Griffith is averaging 4.06 digs per set to rank fourth in the America East. In addition, she places in the league's top-20 for service aces (15th) and assists (18th).
The Retrievers have now picked up a conference award in each of the four weeks this season as senior Mallory McIntyre (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) has earned two Setter of the Week honors while classmates Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) and Emily Witsaman (Medina, Ohio/Medina) were each tabbed as the league Player of the Week once.
UMBC wraps up its non-conference schedule with a mid-week match at American on Wednesday evening in Washington, D.C.
