Track and Field Finishes Weekend on High Note

UMBC track and field concluded both the Penn State National and George Mason Patriot Games on Saturday. The teams got big results at both meets as the teams gear up for the America East Championships in a couple weeks.

Urgy Eado led the men in State College with a big win in the 1,000m, leading throughout the race. He crossed the tape in 2:27.88.

The sprint events saw Erick Soetje take third in the 500m dash, clocking in with a time of 1:04.27. John Oputa, James Oakley and Brian Nelson also had top ten finishes on the day. Oputa took ninth in the 400m dash with a time of 49.91, while Oakley took fourth (21.81, invite) and Nelson took third (21.98) in the 200m dash respectively.

Tori Johnson led the women, taking first in the 500m dash with a time of 1:16.16. Funmi Daramola and Amani Wallace each had top seven finishes, going seventh in the 400m dash (57.94) and sixth in the 200m dash (25.15).

In Fairfax, the men had a slew of top six finishers in a variety of events. Andrew Daniels had a fifth place finish in the 60m hurdles, clocking in at 8.62. Scott Boettinger and Kyle Kulp went four-six in the 500m dash, finishing in times of 1:09.80 and 1:10.03 respectively. Marcus Foster took home fifth in the finals of the 200m dash with a time of 23.14.

In the field, Christian Kallenberg earned a third place finish in the heptathlon with a career best score of 4,729. Russell Bowman took home fourth in the shot put, with his best throw coming in at 14.02m. Alexios Prodanas rounded out the field with a third place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 16.55m.

The women were led by a first place finish by Yinka Alabi in the 200m dash, crossing the finish line in 26.20. Bridgett Redding and Kelsey Ponton were the other top finishers for the women in the 800m (fifth, 2:22.45) and 3,000m (sixth, 10:51.65) respectively. 

UMBC returns to the track at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge at Penn State next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4.
