Beeman Breaks School Record, Retrievers Win Individual Titles on Final Day of ECAC/IC4A Championships
PRINCETON, N.J. – UMBC junior Alisha Beeman (Bridgeport, Conn./Bunnell/Hartford) broke the school record in the high jump while seniors Dennison Long (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt/FIU) and Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) earned individual victories as the Retriever track and field team wrapped up competition at the ECAC and IC4A Championships, Sunday at Princeton's William Weaver Track and Field Stadium.
Already the school record holder in the indoor high jump, as well as the pentathlon and javelin, Beeman claimed her fourth program record on Sunday. The junior cleared 1.72m (5'7.75") to finish sixth in the competition and best the previous top UMBC mark of 1.70m (5'7") set in 2012 by Chowan Brightful. Beeman ranked second in school history coming into the meet with her height of 1.68m (5'6") from the FSU Relays, as well as the Penn Relays.
For the men, Long and Smith earned victories in fine style. Long led the pack in the 100m in yesterday's prelims, but then fell to third in the semifinals. On Sunday, the senior raced past most of the the field with a time of 10.444 to pick up the gold medal in front of Pittsburgh's Carvin Nkanata (10.449).
Smith, a participant at the NCAA Indoor Championships back in March, blew past his own school record in the 800m run on Saturday. Today, the senior edged past the field, winning the event with a time of 1:49.74, just ahead of Army's Clyde Wilson (1:49.81).
In the 110m hurdles, senior Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone), the school record holder in the event, placed fourth in the finals with a time of 14.18.
Senior Jake Albino (Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley) nearly equaled his school record time in the prelims of the 1,500m on Saturday (3:48.35) and finished tenth on Sunday with a time of 3:57.16.
Two Retrievers competed in the triple jump on Sunday as seniors Shioma Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep/St. Francis) and Dosu Teyibo (Silver Spring, Md./Barrie) took part. Obemeata earned a top-ten finish by taking eighth with a top leap of 14.72m (48'3.5") while Teyibo finished 22nd with a jump of 13.85m (45'5.25").
Senior Mo Drammeh (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) came close to equaling his top career leap in the high jump, clearing 2.04m (6'8.25") at Princeton to place tied for 11th on Sunday.
In the shot put, senior Yao Adantor (Laurel, Md./Reservoir/Morgan State/Maryland) recorded a toss of 15.95m (52'4") to place 21st.
Two Retriever women's relays competed on Sunday afternoon with the 4x100 team placing fifth with a time of 46.35 and the 4x400 squad finishing seventh with a time of 3:46.80.
The UMBC teams will have next weekend off before select athletes will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. for the 2014 NCAA East Preliminaries on May 29-31.
