CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC junior Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and senior Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) have each been named the America East Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning.
The awards are the first weekly conference honors for the UMBC track and field program which is preparing for the America East Indoor Championships in New York City on Feb. 23-24.
Jackson garners her sixth career award after capturing the top spot in the 200m dash against a national field at the Penn State Nationals over the weekend. The junior posted a top season time of 24.50, which ranks second in the America East this season. In addition, Jackson advanced to the finals in the 60m dash, placing sixth in the event. Her time of 7.48 from the Penn State Relays on Jan. 11 currently leads the league, with two weekends left before the conference meet.
Smith captures his first career America East weekly award following a second-straight record-breaking performance in the 800m run. The senior originally broke the school record in the event at the NYU Team Challenge on Jan. 24 with a time of 1:51.30. Then, at Penn State, Smith lowered the time even further to 1:49.15. At the conclusion of the weekend, the UMBC senior captain leads the conference and sits tied for 13th in the nation.
Jackson, Smith, and the rest of the Retriever program continues its work towards the America East Championships by competing at the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York, N.Y. this weekend.
