Women's Tennis Edged, 4-3, at Richmond

Richmond, Va. – The hard-luck UMBC women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision at Richmond (8-12) on April 18.

UMBC (7-11) has dropped three of its last four matches, but all three decisions have been by identical 4-3 scores.

The host Spiders won all three singles matches to take a 1-0 lead, but UMBC battled back in singles, as seniors Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) and Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) and freshman Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) all posted straight set victories .

Berghaus, the reigning America East Player of the Week, won at No. 1 singles, defeating Anna Abadias Morales, 6-3, 6-1 and improving to 5-2 at the top singles position.

Stange-Jonsson triumphed, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5 singles over Katya Salas, while Dolashvili triumphed, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 3 over Elizabeth Sims.

Sophomore Madlena Kurasz (Poland) had a long struggle with Brittany Boys at the No. 2 slot, but fell, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-2.

The Retrievers now prepare for the America East Conference Champioships, which UMBC will host in Columbia, Md. on April 25-27.
