Fairfax, Va.—UMBC swimming and diving took to the pool on day one of the Patriot Invitational on Thursday, with several Retrievers earning top finishes. The men sit in a tie for first place, while the women are in sixth after Thursday.

The men sit in a tie for first with Drexel with 212 points. Seton Hall and the host Patriots are three and four while UNCW, Florida Atlantic, American and Shippensburg (Pa.) round out the field.

Drexel leads on the women's side, just ahead of UNCW. George Mason, Seton Hall and Richmond are three through five, with the Retrievers, Shippensburg (Pa.), Florida Atlantic and American round out the field.

Emily Escobedo once again led the Retriever women, setting a new pool record in the 200 IM finals. The New York native won the event in a time of 1:59.69, after having the top time in the prelims with a time of 2:00.33.

Kayla Lilly earned a 12th place finish in the 200 IM, finishing the B final with a time of 2:07.93, while Laura Massicotte finished third (19th) in the C final in 2:09.03.

Hania Moro earned a second place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:57.59, while Alissa Caulfied finished in 16th place with a B final finish in 5:06.03. Haylee Committe was the lone Retriever in the 50 free finals, finishing in a tie for third (19th overall) in 24.53.

In relay action, Committe, Emily Vance, Megan Allison and Escobedo earned a 10th place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.20. Escobedo then teamed up with Lauren Day, Amanda Day and Caulfield to finish seventh in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:51.47.

The men saw Ilia Rattsev lead off the individual events with a fourth place finish in the 500 free in 4:32.48. Haythem Abdelkhalek took eighth in 4:37.70, while Andrew McKissick (13th), Alexander Gliese (17th), and Garrett Wlochowski (23rd) also placed in the final heats in times of 4:37.49, 4:36.47, and 4:44.15 respectively with Gliese winning the C final.

Nikola Trajkovic earned a fourth place finish in the A final of the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.63. Connor Ganley also swam in the A finals, touching in with a time of 1:54.28 for eighth place. Ahmed Wahby  won the B finals in a time of 1:53.28, while Kyle Paxton finished the C finals in fifth in 1:55.23.

Gregor Spoerlein took third place in the 50 free, touching the wall in 20.70, while Rattsev won the B finals in a time of 21.05. Darnell Yarberough took home 23rd (seventh) in the C finals with a time of 21.72.

The Retrievers took part in both relays, with the 400 medley team of Wahby, Paxton, Philip Adejumo, and Spoerlein finished third in a time of 3:21.10. In the 200 free relay, Ganley, Yarberough, Paxton and Spoerlein finished fifth with a time of 1:23.92.

The invitational continues with prelims at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning, followed by finals at 6 p.m.
