CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—UMBC junior midfielder Aly Gazarek (Aldie, Va./Freedom/South Florida) was selected to the America East All-Academic Team, the league announced Tuesday.
A senior academically after redshirting her true freshman season at University of South Florida, Gazarek maintains a 3.83 grade-point average as a psychology major. She has been recognized on the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of her first two seasons at UMBC, and she has earned semester academic honors each term, including President's List for a perfect 4.0 GPA twice.
On the field, Gazarek has been one of UMBC's top defenders throughout her career. She has tallied one goal and three assists for five career points, including one assist this season, when she took nine shots in 16 games. In addition, she has started 46 of the 50 games in which she has played in her three years at UMBC.
Gazarek boasts the highest GPA of the 11 members of the women's soccer all-academic squad.
America East All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time (e.g., 11 on the field for soccer) but can be more if there is a tie in the voting. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of the team's games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration. The all-academic teams are then voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.
