Women’s Soccer Announces 2010 Team Captains

BALTIMORE—Rising seniors Christine Sadowski (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) and Sandra Vacarino (Mantua, N.J./Clearview Regional) and rising junior LeAnne Edgar (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) were voted team co-captains for the 2010 season by their coaches and teammates, UMBC head coach Alyssa Radu announced today.

"These three individuals carry the characteristics that make good leaders," Radu said. "The leadership of any team is vital to its success. I believe being a leader is about being authentic, being yourself, maximizing your strengths, accepting your limitations and the willingness to develop them. These three captains understand this role and accept the challenges the position brings. They lead first and foremost by example."

Sadowski, who also served as a team captain as a junior in 2009, was named the Retrievers' Most Valuable Athlete at UMBC's varsity awards banquet last month after starting all 17 games on defense and scoring three points on a goal and an assist.

Vacarino was the team's leading scorer in 2009 with 10 points on four goals and two assists. She has started all 36 games in the last two seasons. Edgar started 12 of the first 13 games of the season before an injury ended her sophomore campaign.

"This team has been through a lot, and these three individuals have played and will continue to play large roles in helping us grow as a program," Radu said. "They are the type of leaders who will listen first and respect every member of the team. They recognize the importance that everyone, irrelevant of class, brings something to our team and locker room. They are all very talented players, but more importantly great people that I trust completely."
