FARMVILLE, Va.—Longwood (1-2-0) scored two early goals in a 55-second span and defeated UMBC (1-2-0) by a score of 3-0 in women's soccer action Friday evening at the Athletics Complex.
The Lancers took an early 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute when Kelsey Pardue took a pass from Nikki Glisson and shot into the upper left over the head of UMBC freshman keeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/Sir Thomas Aquinas) at the 11:39 mark. Less than a minute later, Longwood made it 2-0 as Lindsey Ottavio broke free down the left side after receiving a pass from Kacie Oliver and promptly placed her shot into the upper right corner of the net at 12:34. The hosts took the 2-0 lead into halftime.
Longwood added its third goal in the 85th minute when Ottavio scored her second goal of the match with an unassisted shot to the right corner after collecting a loose ball at 84:30.
Kadet recorded seven saves in 90 minutes between the pipes, while Longwood goalie Marcia Biddle stopped three shots. The Lancers outshot the Retrievers, 18-4, including 10-0 in the second half. Junior midfielder LeAnne Edgar (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) took two of UMBC's shots in the contest.
The Retrievers return to action on Monday, when they head to Campbell for a 6 p.m. match.
