Women’s Basketball Closes Out the First Half of #AEHoops Play at Stony Brook on Wednesday

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball will head to Long Island looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since early November against the Seawolves on Wednesday night. The Retrievers are coming off a big 64-62 win against New Hampshire on Saturday for their first win in America East play. Junior Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va.) had another career night, scoring 27 points on 8-12 shooting, including 7-11 from three.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the contest at 8-12, 1-6 AE after snapping a seven game losing streak in a thrilling 64-62 win against New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon. Junior Tyler Moore turned in another career day with 27 points, scoring 16 of them in the first quarter. Classmate Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) hit the game winner with the game tied with 4.5 seconds left. She had 14 points with seven assists and six rebounds.

-Sophomore Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) leads the team averaging 11.8 points per game with a team best 6.6 rebounds per game. Oliver is the only other Retriever in double figures at 10.3 ppg with a team best 27 steals. Moore leads the team from deep shooting 41.1 percent with 39 made three pointers.

Scouting the Seawolves:

-Stony Brook enters the contest at 15-5, 4-3 AE, including a stellar 8-3 at home after taking down Vermont 67-61 on Saturday. Jerell Matthews led a quartet of Seawolves in double figures with 19 points and seven rebounds. Stony Brook used a big third quarter to pull away from the Catamounts in Burlington.

-Shania Johnson leads the Seawolves on the offensive end averaging 16.3 ppg with 150 assists and 44 steals in 35.5 minutes per game. She is shooting 37 percent from the floor and 35 percent from three. Matthews and India Pagan are also averaging double figures at 16.0 and 12.6 ppg respectively. Pagan is the leader on the glass, grabbing 6.1 rebounds per contest.

All-Time Series:

-This will be the 35th meeting between the two schools with the Seawolves leading the series 19-15 including wins in three of the last four. UMBC is 5-10 all-time in games played on Long Island.

-Last year, the Seawolves swept the season series, holding UMBC to under 50 in both games. The last Retriever win on the road came February 20, 2013, 52-51.

Milestone Watch:

-Junior Tyler Moore is just 12 points away from number 500 for her career. Moore has scored 155 points already this year, after scoring 78 last year and 255 during her freshman campaign.

Conference Honors:

-Junior Te'yJah Oliver and freshman Kayla Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) were named America East Player and Rookie of the week respectively on December 24 for their efforts against Morgan State.

-Oliver and Jackson join Janee'a Summers, Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) and O'lesheya Braxton (Paterson, N.J.) who earned America East Player awards earlier in the season.
