Baltimore, Md.-- Junior Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scored a season high 25 points, as the Retrievers snapped a five-game losing streak, 73-68 to Morgan State on Thursday. Freshman Kayla Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) chipped in a career high 16 points.
The Retrievers improve to 7-5, while the Bears fall to 1-12.
Both teams got out to a slow start offensively. Morgan State jumped out early 4-0 before Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) got the Retrievers on the board with a jumper to cut the deficit in half. UMBC found their footing late in the quarter, with Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) drilling a triple just before the ned of the quarter as the Retrievers trailed 10-9 after one.
Kristen Teklits (New Fairfield, Conn.) gave the Retrievers their first lead of the night early on in the second, hitting a three to go up 14-13 forcing a Morgan State timeout. From there, the Bears would rip off an 8-0 run to take a five point lead. However, it would be the Retrievers with the last strike, getting a put back bucket from Kayla Jackson just before the buzzer to give UMBC a 25-24 lead at the break.
Jackson and Teklits led UMBC in the first half, each with six points.
Te'yJah Oliver led a surge for the Retrievers out of the locker room with an and one and a triple to force an early Morgan State timeout. UMBC used a 7-0 run to push ahead by nine, capped by an Oliver step back jumper. However, it would be all Kayla Jackson in the third. She scored eight points in the quarter, giving UMBC an eight point lead after three.
After leading by as much as 17 in the final quarter, the Bears made a furious rally, getting the deficit all the way to three with 25 seconds left. The Bears had a couple chances to tie, but could not convert. Oliver hit two free throws at the end to hold on for a 73-68 win.
Oliver led the Retrievers with 25 points, 23 of which came in the second half. Jackson chipped in a career best 16 points adding nine rebounds.
The Retrievers will have off for the holidays before returning to action against Maryland Eastern Shore on New Year's Eve. Tip-off with the Hawks is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
