America East Tournament Central

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC women's basketball advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2018 America East Tournament behind a career day from sophomore Allison McGrath (South Park, Pa./South Park) with 21 points. Four Retrievers scored in double figures to move the Retrievers to the next round of the tournament.

UMBC improves to 5-25 while UMass Lowell ends their season at 4-26.

Four Retrievers reached double figures, led by Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) with 23. McGrath scored a career high 21 points on 7-14 shooting, going 5-12 from three. Sophomore Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scored 13 with Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/VCU) adding 10 and nine rebounds.

Kayla Gibbs paced the River Hawks with 27 points, tying a career high. Brianna Rudolph also reached double figures with 16 in the loss.

The River Hawks got out the gates early, getting out to an early six-point lead, all from Gibbs off offensive rebounds. UMBC would keep it close, trailing by no more than three at any point in the quarter. However, the River Hawks scored the last five points of the quarter to take a 19-13 lead into the second.

UMBC would turn it around in the second, going on a 7-0 run over three minutes to take the lead for good. McGrath scored nine of her 11 points in the second quarter during that stretch, finishing with 11 points in the half. The Retrievers made nine of their last ten to take their biggest lead of the half, 37-30.

McGrath led all scorers with 11 points in the opening 20 minutes, as Castaldo and Oliver each added nine. The Retrievers shot 75 percent in the second quarter, and 50 percent for the half.

The Retriever offense continued their hot shooting in the third, leading by as many as 15. However, the River Hawks would start their comeback, trimming the deficit all the way down to nine heading to the fourth after forcing five UMBC turnovers in the period.

The surge continued in the fourth, but an and one by Castaldo midway through pushed the lead back to double digits. That lead would reach 12 points after Lakiah Sims (Riverdale, Ga./Charles Drew/Palm Beach State) hit a layup off a beautiful feed from Oliver.

UMass Lowell brought it all the way down to four, but the Retrievers hit their free throws down the stretch to take a 73-65 victory on Wednesday.

UMBC will head to Portland, Maine for the America East Quarterfinals against No. 1 seed Maine on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 12:02 p.m. from the Cross Insurance Arena on ESPN3.
