UMBC Women’s Basketball to Honor Five Seniors; Host Hartford on Thursday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC women's basketball hosts Hartford in their regular season home finale on Thursday night. The Retrievers will honor five seniors who will be playing in their final home game in the black and gold. Most recently, the Retrievers dropped a 79-45 decision to Albany on Saturday. Senior Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) led the way with ten points each.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-The Retrievers dropped a 79-45 decision to Albany on Saturday in their most recent outing. Senior Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) led the way with ten points each.

-Castaldo leads the Retrievers in scoring at 11.6 ppg as UMBC is averaging 51.4 points per game as a team. Castaldo is fourth on the team in rebounding, pulling down 3.2 boards per game. Summers is averaging 6.9 ppg, leading the team with 5.7 rpg. Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/VCU) sets the table on offense dishing out 2.7 assists per game.

Scouting the Hawks:

-The Hawks head to Baltimore after dismantling Vermont on Saturday in a 91-52 rout of the Catamounts. Four Hawks hit double figures, led by Lindsey Abed with 24 points on eight three pointers. Hartford shot over 50 percent from the field, holding the Catamounts to 33 percent shooting.

-Abed leads the Hawks on offense, averaging 13.4 ppg, shooting 34 percent from three. She also leads the team in assists, averaging 4.0 per game. Janelle Harrison (12.1 ppg), Darby Lee (11.6) and Sierra DaCosta (10.1) are also averaging double figures for Hartford with Harrison leading the team with 5.8 rpg.

All-Time Series:

-Hartford and UMBC will be meeting for the 34th time in the series, with the Hawks holding a commanding 25-8 advantage, including a 65-54 victory in January in Hartford.

-UMBC is 3-3 in the last six matchups in Baltimore, with the last home win coming in 2016 when the Retrievers defeated the Hawks 58-51 when current assistant coach Taylor McCarley scored 19 points, going 6-13 from the field.

-The Retrievers will honor five seniors prior to the game with Hartford. Chukwuma Chiamaka (Lagos, Nigeria), Carly Harris (Glenshaw, Pa.), Laura Castaldo, Brittani Burgess and Lakiah Sims (Riverdale, Ga.) will be playing their final regular season home game on Thursday.

-Pregame festivities begin at 6:45 p.m. so be sure to get to the arena early to watch the ceremony.

Castaldo Approaching 1K:

-Senior guard Laura Castaldo is approaching the 1,000 point plateau in her career. The New York native has amassed 983 points in her career, leaving her just 17 points shy of the mark. She has played in 118 career games, and is in the top ten in five different categories in program history.

UMBC Basketball Has a New Home:

-UMBC women's and men's basketball, as well as the department of athletics is set to move into the brand new UMBC Event Center in the coming weeks. The $90 million facility will house UMBC athletic department, men's and women's basketball and volleyball. The men will open the facility against Vermont on Saturday, Feb. 3 while the women will host Binghamton in their first game in the arena on Thursday, Feb. 8.

-Construction began in February 2016 and will be located next to Retriever Soccer Park and host various events from sporting events to graduations and concerts.
