Summers Records Double-Double; Women’s Basketball Drops 79-45 decision to Albany on Saturday

Albany, N.Y.— UMBC women's basketball fell to host Albany Great Danes, 79-45 on Saturday afternoon. Senior Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) led the way with 10 points each in the loss. Summers added 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

UMBC falls to 3-24, 2-12 AE on the year while the Great Danes improve to 22-5, 11-3 AE.

Castaldo and Summers each scored ten for the Retrievers in the loss, with Summers adding 11 rebounds.

Bose Aiyalogbe led the Great Danes with 14 points, with classmate Jessica Fequiere adding 12 points. Tiana-Jo Carter and Kyara Frames each had 10 points to pace the Great Danes.

The Retrievers would open the game on a high note, getting a layup from Castaldo to start the game. From there, the Great Danes would go on an 8-0 run to take a 15-5 lead with five minutes to go. UMBC would answer with a bucket from Jen Gast (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), but it was Albany who threw the final punch in the quarter, ripping off a 9-0 run, capped by a Jessica Fequiere layup at the buzzer to take a 24-7 lead after one.

Gast would end the run with another layup early in the second, before Albany would extend their lead to 21 early on, leading by as many as 24 in the first half. Summers had all six of her first half points in the second quarter, as UMBC trailed 39-17 at the half.

Summers led UMBC with six points, with Castaldo and Gast adding four each. Bose Aiyalogbe led the Great Danes with ten points as Albany shot 41 percent from the floor.

The Retrievers would make a push in the third, getting six points from Castaldo as UMBC cut into the deficit after a 7-0 run. Albany would lead after three, 57-30, ending the quarter with eight points from Kyara Frames.

Albany would start the fourth on an 11-0 run, as they would take a 79-45 victory on Saturday.

The Retrievers will return to Baltimore for the home finale on Senior Night against Hartford. UMBC will honor their five seniors; Chukwuma Chiamaka, Carly Harris, Lakiah Sims, Laura Castaldo and Brittani Burgess pregame. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
