Scouting the Retrievers:
-The Retrievers are coming off a 51-46 loss to New Hampshire on Sunday, which saw UMBC outrebound the Wildcats 48-31. UMBC had a chance late to tie, but their attempt fell short as they fall to 3-22, 2-10 AE on the year. Seniors Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/VCU) and sophomore Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) led the way with eight points each.
-Castaldo leads the Retrievers in scoring at 11.6 ppg as UMBC is averaging 51.7 points per game as a team. Castaldo is fourth on the team in rebounding, pulling down 3.3 boards per game. Freshman Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) is averaging 7.0 ppg, leading the team with 5.5 rpg. Brittani Burgess (White Plains, Md./St. Mary's Ryken/VCU) sets the table on offense dishing out 2.8 assists per game.
Scouting the Seawolves:
-Stony Brook comes into the contest at 15-11, 7-6 AE, after knocking off Maine on Sunday 76-68. The Seawolves shot a blistering 52 percent from the floor, led by Shania Johnson with a team high 23 points, adding nine assists. Cheyenne Clark and Jerell Matthews also hit double figures with 22 and 10 points each.
-Johnson leads the team averaging 15.8 ppg, pulling down 4.4 rpg. She is shooting 38 percent from the floor, including 35 percent from three averaging 5.5 assists per game. Matthews is the only other player averaging double digits at 14.3 ppg. Clark leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 9.1 boards per game.
-UMBC and Stony Brook will be meeting for the 34th time in the all-time series, with the Seawolves leading 18-15, including a 69-44 win in Baltimore earlier this year.
-UMBC has not won on Long Island since 2013, and the Black and Gold are 5-9 all-time in games played at Stony Brook.
-Laura Castaldo is quickly approaching the top ten in three different categories. She is 16 three pointers away from 150 for her career, while needing 39 points to reach 1,000. Castaldo is currently in the top ten in minutes played and games played.
-Head coach Phil Stern can also reach some milestones in 2017-18. He needs 14 wins for 300 in his career and eight for 200 at UMBC.
UMBC Basketball Has a New Home:
-UMBC women's and men's basketball, as well as the department of athletics is set to move into the brand new UMBC Event Center in the coming weeks. The $90 million facility will house UMBC athletic department, men's and women's basketball and volleyball. The men will open the facility against Vermont on Saturday, Feb. 3 while the women will host Binghamton in their first game in the arena on Thursday, Feb. 8.
-Construction began in February 2016 and will be located next to Retriever Soccer Park and host various events from sporting events to graduations and concerts.
-UMBC continues their New York road swing on Saturday, Feb. 17 against Albany. Tip-off with the Great Danes is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN 3.
