Annapolis, Md.— UMBC women's basketball got a game best 17 points from senior Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South), but fell to the Bonnies on Saturday. The Bonnies used 17 offensive rebounds, scoring 14 second chances points in the win.
The Retrievers fall to 1-5 while St. Bonaventure improves to 4-2 on the year.
UMBC opened the game on a strong note, getting a three from Allison McGrath (South Park, Pa./South Park) to open the scoring. The Bonnies would go on a run, before a Laura Castaldo triple put the Retrievers back in front early.
From there the Retrievers would go on an 8-0 run late, holding the Bonnies scoreless for the final four minutes of the opening stanza to take a 15-12 lead after one.
Both teams exchanged baskets in the early going of the second quarter. McGrath struck again with a floater, then stealing the ball on the very next possession and hitting the fast break layup to extend the Retriever lead.
St. Bonaventure answered back with a mini 4-0 run to tie it, however the Retrievers retook the lead with a Castaldo layup.
Second chances hurt the Retrievers just before the half, as the Bonnies grabbed ten offensive rebounds in the half, leading to 12 second chance points as they took a 30-29 lead into the locker rooms.
McGrath led the Retrievers with seven first half points, Castaldo netted six as UMBC shot 33.3 percent from the floor.
The Retrievers came out of the locker room firing, scoring six straight to take their largest lead of the day after St. Bonaventure hit a pair of threes early. UMBC would hold the Bonnies without a field goal for four minutes and scoreless for two as they took a five-point lead late.
However, St. Bonaventure went on a run of their own to cut the Retriever lead to 45-44 after three.
Castaldo got the Retrievers off on the right foot in the fourth, getting into the lane, hitting the layup and drawing the foul. The Bonnies would use a 7-0 run to give them an early lead, holding UMBC scoreless over a three-minute stretch.
McGrath would end the drought with a beautiful backdoor layup, but the Bonnies would rattle off six straight to take the lead for good. The Retrievers would lose 63-54 to the Bonnies on Saturday.
Castaldo had a game-high 17 for the Retrievers on 7-14 shooting. Oliver netted ten, with McGrath poured in nine for UMBC.
Mckenna Maycock led the Bonnies with 23 points, going 4-7 from three.
UMBC will face either Navy or North Dakota State tomorrow, Sunday Nov. 26 at 1 or 3:15 p.m.
