Matosinhos, Portugal – UMBC women's basketball rising sophomore Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy/Liceo Classico Enrico Perito) and team Italy finished in sixth place at the FIBA U20 European Championships, held in Portugal this past week.
Spain won the tournament for the second straight year, defeating Slovenia, 73-63, in the championship contest.
After going a perfect 3-0 in the group stage with victories against Portugal (59-55), Latvia (67-55) and Lithuania (70-61), the team took down Sweden in the Round of 16, 69-46. In the quarterfinals, Italy fell to France, 77-61, to fall into the consolation bracket. There, they knocked off Latvia (89-87) to earn a spot in the fifth-place game where they ultimately lost to Hungary, 78-73.
Costa, who played in six of the team's seven games, finished the tournament with 26 points on 11-28 shooting and added 18 rebounds. Her best overall effort came against Latvia, where she scored ten points with three rebounds. Costa poured in nine points on 4-9 shooting with five rebounds against Lithuania in the group stage.
Costa and her UMBC women's basketball teammates will kick off the 2017-18 season at Fordham (Nov. 10) and Hofstra (Nov. 12) before hosting Gettysburg on Nov. 14.
