UMBC Women’s Basketball Head Coach Phil Stern has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Retrievers through the 2018-19 season, as announced today by Director of Athletics Tim Hall.

UMBC women’s basketball was unable to overcome shooting 16 percent in the opening half of Sunday evening’s America East semifinal matchup against No. 2 Albany as the Retrievers fell to the Great Danes, 66-37, at the Events Center. The Retrievers were led by 11 points from junior guard Liz McNaughton (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax).

UMBC women’s basketball’s sophomore guard Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) helped the No. 6 Retrievers stun No. 3 Stony Brook connecting on a bank shot with 3.2 seconds remaining to lift UMBC to a 49-47 victory in front of an ESPN3 audience in the America East Quarterfinals on Saturday night at the Events Center.

UMBC women’s basketball had a pair of its guards earn America East All-Conference recognition at the league’s annual awards banquet on Friday night at the Events Center. Capree Garner Scores 31, But Massive UMBC Rally Falls Short in 84-78 Setback
BALTIMORE – UMBC junior guard Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) scored a season-high 31 points, and the Retrievers shaved a 23-point deficit to three points late in the game, but fell to visiting UMass Lowell, 84-78, in a wild affair at the RAC Arena. Garner’s effort was the 21st 30-point performance in school history and the first since Michelle Kurowski scored 30 versus Binghamton in January of 2011.

Five Double-Digit Scorers Pace Women’s Basketball to 93-68 Victory Against Eastern
The UMBC women’s basketball team used five double-digit scorers to post its highest point total since Nov. 2009 in a 93-68 victory against the Eastern Eagles on Friday’s season-opener at the RAC Arena. Junior guard Capree Garner paced the Retrievers with a game-high 16 points, to go with six assists and three steals in her first contest with the black and gold.

UMBC women’s basketball has been picked to finish sixth in the America East’s annual coaches’ preseason poll, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. Voting was conducted by the conference’s nine head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
