Game 3, UMBC vs. UMES Game Notes
America East Game Notes
BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball returns home to take on Saturday, Nov. 16 to take on UMES at the RAC Arena. Game time is set for 1 p.m., with the action airing live on Q1370/www.q1370.com and on UMBCRetrievers.tv courtesy of the America East digital network. Troy Green and Dan Levin have the call.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS (1-1): In a busy start to the campaign, UMBC posted a 1-1 record in the opening three days of the season, defeating Eastern (Pa.) on Monday, 59-50, before falling, 78-62, to Coppin State on Wednesday. Freshman forward Sara Tarbert has started her career out with a bang, becoming the first America East freshman in this decade to open up her career with back-to-back 20-point efforts, including a game-high 23 points in her latest outing against the Eagles, in addition to a double-double in her collegiate-opener. The forward is averaging 22.0 points and 7.5 rebounds through two games. Fellow freshman Emily Russo has added steady play from the point guard position, shooting 62.5 percent from three-point land and registering 11 points in two-straight games to start out her career.
Sophomore center Bridget O'Donnell is shooting a team-best 69.2 percent from the floor thus far and is grabbing 7.0 rebounds per game. O'Donnell has already surpassed her scoring output from a season ago, while also registering a career-high four blocks against Eastern and dishing out a career-high four assists versus Coppin State. Rookie guard Taylor McCarley is coming off the bench and providing 5.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest for the Retrievers.
Head coach Phil Stern is in his 12th season at the helm of the Retrievers' program and is 12 victories away from becoming the program's all-time winningest coach, a mark Sue Furnary captured while coaching the black and gold from 1980-1993 and posting a 152-193 record.
The Retrievers, who were picked to finish seventh in the America East Coaches' Preseason poll, own the youngest roster in the America East, as the squad features nine newcomers, while returning one senior and a pair of sophomores. UMBC returned eight percent of its scoring from a year ago and had a combined 21 Division I starts on its roster coming into the season, all coming from senior captain Dana Lewis.
SCOUTING THE LADY HAWKS (0-2): UMES is in the midst of a three-game road swing and is winless heading into Saturday's contest, having dropped its first two contests of the 2013-14 campaign by a combined 11 points. The Lady Hawks are coming off a 76-69 loss to American on Wednesday, despite a combined 51 points from guards Jessica Long and TeAmber Burke. Long, a junior guard, tallied a career-high 28 points in the loss, while Burke, a sophomore guard, added 23 points.
Through two games, Burke and Long are averaging 20-plus points for UMES. Long is shooting 51.7 percent from the field to average 22.5 points per game, while adding 4.5 assists per contest. Burke has hit 8-of-14 shots from beyond the arc and is averaging 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. The Lady Hawks are outrebounding their opponents by 7.5 rebound per game, behind red-shirt sophomore forward Alexis Udoji and senior forward Shanyce Stewart, who are cleaning up the glass by averaging 10 boards per game thus far this season.
INSIDE THE SERIES: UMBC owns a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series, but UMES has won two of the last three matchups. The Retrievers are 5-0 all-time on their home court against the Lady Hawks.
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE LADY HAWKS: UMBC had a chance to tie the game with 25 seconds remaining in last December's meeting in Princess Anne, Md., but the Retrievers could not get the roll and would go on to lose, 51-45, despite Bria White's team-best 15 points. Guard Raven Harris matched a career-high with seven steals and added 12 points and six rebounds.
ON THE HORIZON FOR THE RETRIEVERS: The Retrievers play at home for the third time in four games when they host American on Wednesday, Nov. 20. UMBC finishes out the month with four consecutive games away from the RAC Arena, including a pair of games in the Navy Classic on Nov. 29 and 30.
