Pierce Slugs First Career Homer as Softball Falls to Towson

Greenville, NC – Freshman Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) hit her first career home run, but it wasn't enough as the Retrievers fell 13-2, in five innings, to Towson on Saturday in day two of the Pirate Clash.

Pierce's third inning blast down the left field line put UMBC (0-3) on the board and cut the Tiger lead to 3-1.

Sophomore Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the third with an RBI double in the left-center gap to bring home Haley DeLany (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area).

Towson (6-2), however, responded with 10 runs over the next two innings to put the game away.

Freshman Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 2-for-3 and classmate Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va./Patriot) recorded her second double of the year in the game.

Senior Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta)  started the game in the circle, receiving the loss after two innings and three runs allowed.

UMBC's game against the host ECU has been rescheduled to Sunday at 2 p.m. due to inclement weather.  The Retrievers will first take on Saint Joseph's at 9:30 a.m.
